P1 surface area

In a recent thread I posted cut-open images of a PL30001 from my Cherokee. Here's the picture:

Someone asked that I measure the filter surface area, but I'd already tossed it. Yesterday I changed the oil in my '66 440, so this time I did measure the PL30001 area. The element has 66 pleats, each pleat is 0.7" deep and 3.8" long. So the total area is 66*2*.7*3.8, or 351.12 square inches.

I'll try to snap some images of the 440's filter, but it really looks the same as the one from the Cherokee. Just a little darker (as expected with a richer-running carbureted engine that also burns a bit more oil and has a little more blow-by).

Is that the size it originally takes or oversize?

Oh yeah, the filters I use are between 50-ish and 65-ish square inches. That filter was probably designed for cold mornings and old straight weight oils.

That's major surface area! I doubt you'll have flow issues with that filter.

Its the original type filter used on 60s Mopar big- and small-blocks, and Ford used it on all their v8s too including the 5.0 right up to the end of production (Motorcraft FL-1A equivalent). I'm pretty sure GM also used it on a lot of their engines in the 60s, because the old AC/Delco PF-2 is also the same cross-reference. The PF-20 was the "shorty" version.

Its oversize for the Jeep but same thread pitch, bypass pressure, and gasket diameter so its a perfect replacement.
