I've been using Pure 1 filters for many of my 5000-6000 mile oci on my 2004 pontiac vibe. I've noticed on the box of the filter (PL14476) that purolator claims a 99.9% efficiency @ 40 microns.
Why is this lower than their other filters which rate 99.9% @ 20 microns? Would I be better served by switching filter brands?

Thanks!

I love pureOne but on that filter model, myself wouldn't use it, I like the rating for 20 microns, it makes me feel more warm and fuzzy about the situation. Probably get a Napa Gold for almost the same price and they are more efficient than that. Maybe you could go up a size in filter with PureOne and get a better efficiency rating.

The PureOne PL14610 is also rated at 99.9% @ 40 microns, but I still use them.

Nobody knows for sure why the smaller spin-on filters have a worse beta rating. BTW - all PureOne cartridge filters are rated at 99.9% @ 40 microns too (per an email from their Tech Dept).

The pl24011 and 30001 are at 20 microns so thats why i use them. Otherwise like in your case i probably wouldnt, unless all filters in your application are like that.

Let me just say if you want better efficiency go with Bosch D+, WIX, or believe it or not Fram, they have some of the best efficiency ratings for their small filters. I really am not a huge fan of the smaller PureOne's, I will use them from time to time but there are better filters. Bosch D+ 3323 equivalent to the (p14610) has exceptional filtering ability. I had a PC test done on one of my UOA's and it had 1 particle @ 25um and nothing larger.

Does is say what the efficiency is at what micron level on the Distance Plus box? Might have to consider the D+ 3323 instead of the PL14610 in the future.

The Bosch D+ (D3311), according to AA web site is also rated at 40 microns. Fram I believe is also 40 microns but @95 or 97%, can't remember off the top of my head.

Can anyone give me a cross referenced model # for a larger P1 or Bosch, etc for my app.?

oh, wait! On the Napa web site a Napa Gold #FIL 1394 has bet ratios of 2/20=6/20. If I figured correctly that's 50% @ 6u and 95% @ 20u. Better than the equivalent sized P1 for my app. You all agree?
Thanks!

You've read the beta ratios correctly ... but saying 95% @ 20 microns is better than 99.9% @ 40 microns is inconclusive. Could be they aren't that much different. I've never seen any kind of correlation to know for sure.

Yes, another situation where standardized ratings would be awesome. Interesting that all their cartridges are the lower rating as well. I wouldn't be surprised that is similar from all manufacturers. None I have contacted publish betas for cartridges.

Ahhh! your right, didn't think of that.
Geez, I'm tired of not being able to find a oil filter in the 6 to 7 dollar range that can filter better than 40u. The Mobil1 filter is on sale at AAP for 10 bucks, what's the effeciency of that I wonder for my vehicle?

A filter like that , though, is a waste of money for me because I don't do 10k oci. I'd be pulling it half way thru it's usefuleness. Don't think I'd like to leave it on either--feels like an incomplete oil change.
