I have this code come up on a '99 Maxima California Emissions. Are these rear O2 sensors crucial for fuel mileage and performance?

From what I understand only the front O2 sensors have an effect on perfomance and fuel economy where the rears only monitor the CAT.

You are correct.

But to be able to pass the emission test, you will need the working rear sensor. Please replace with OEM eqvt and NOT Bosch.

Spartuss - Right.

But also, a rear O2 code can mean a bad sensor, or a bad cat.
Is it a specific code, like a heater circuit code? Low/high readings?

Denso or NGK is probably OEM for Nissan.

The code is P0159 and P0158. Sometimes there is also a P0430 code when the other codes aren't present.
