A quick google search indicates it could be a slew of things including the "upstream o2 sensor." It's a $30 part. Am I wrong for simply swapping this item out or am I missing a step?

Check the O2-A fuse in the under hood fuse box, if that is okay go ahead a swap the sensor. $30 doesnt buy a whole lot of diagnostic time so I have no problem throwning an inexpensive part at it when it the likely culprit.
Didn't say mileage but 02 sensor replacement is normally between 60k and 90k but I don't know anyone that does this. On my Saturn Vue every 50k light would intermittent come on for sensor requiring replacement.
