Oxided Paint

I have a 93 ford van with really destroyed paint. I did the McGuires 3 step program and the van looks great (within reason). However when it rains I get streaks from the oxided rubber window trim. Water still beads up on the paint but the streaks from the window kind of soak into the paint. In other words, if I wipe the streaks with a dry cloth I can remove most of the streak but not all of it without using water.

Is there any wax I can put on to provided a little more protection and stain resistance?

I use the Black Magic Tire & Trim. It makes a big difference when the trim is done.

You are getting running from your trim dressing.

On rubber trim, i will use AIO, or even UPP, on textured trim i use PB's TR.

I buff off the trim after about 10 minutes, this keeps the trim from running, depending on products used.

Typically, nothing OTC is much good for trim.

Aerospace 303 rubber protectant can clean and protect rubber and plastic trim. It should reduce or eliminate the run-off from trim as well. It also has strong uv protection.

303 is usually available from bots suppy stores and many outodoor sporting goods stores.

Are you applying some kind of dressing or treatment to the rubber trim, or are they untreated/unprotected?

Is the rubber trim OE or was it installed after some kind of aftermarket modification like a raised roof or larger windows?

It sounds like the trim is oxidizing like the paint. If you haven't tried a rubber dressing to minimize the streaking, you might want to experiment a little. Stuff like Armor All would work fine for a test. Don't use oily stuff or petro jelly (not good for rubber).

Thanks for all the usefull advice. the trim is the stock rubber trim that is on the van. The rubber is not causing the paint to oxide, the paint is already oxided.

Would 'tire stuff' work better than Armor all?

Sorry, I meant to say that the rubber was drying out and oxidizing, same thing the paint was doing. That's why you see black streaks.

I would recommend sticking with a water-based protectant over a "tire shine" or some other product that makes tires real glossy. Most have solvents and oils that could make the problem worse. Water-based protectants are easy to tell; they're milky white and thin. Armor All Original Shine is prolly the easiest product to find which is why I suggested it, but stuff like 303 Aerospace protectant and other similar products would work fine, too.

BTW, Is there any localy avaliably (Pep boys, AA...)wax that I could layer to give more protection.

The majority of store-bought waxes cannot really be layered. Most have solvents and/or abrasives that remove some of the previous coat. So 2X wax applications is not 2X protection. Maybe something like 1.25X. The benefit of an extra application is to even out the protection and the shine. When you get to 3rd and 4th applications, there is little extra benefit.

Some polymer sealants can be layered but most of those are boutique-y products like Zaino and Klasse (i.e. expensive and mail order only). At Pep Boys, Liquid Glass is one of the most durable. Hybrid products like Meguiars NXT Tech Wax and Mothers FX Synwax last longer than traditional carnauba car waxes plus they offer a brighter shine and are easy to use. Personally, I like the Meguiars products on dark colors and the Mothers on metallics and lighter colors.

Is the Liquid Glass more durable than the Mequiars and Mothers?

I'd say LG is a bit more durable but not anything dramatic. It doesn't fill or hide light swirls as well as the others do.

My vote for trim is Poorboys trim restore. I just recently treated my trim with it and it worked awesome. This is on my 95 mustang that was in really bad shape as far a fading goes. I did the side window tri and front cowl, they came out perfect thus far. Trim is nice and black and I'm on week 3 and it still looks great.
