owning multiple bikes

Yaris, you gave no reason that you're considering the SV. Great bike, but you "LOVE" your Ninja. Find one bike, maybe the SV, that puts a bigger smile on your face than the Ninja, then pass the Ninja along to someone who'll get a big smile from it.

If you go with the SV, contact Blair at svracingparts.com in Blaine. He knows and races SV650s, and he's a great guy full of SV and V-Strom info.

I want an SV650 for the same reason I love my Ninja. Practicallity. It has fun but manageable power, excellent commuter gas mileage, comfortable riding position and probably the best thing about the SV's the price of them. Its hard to find a better bike for the money. Dont forget just how reliable those V-Twins are in that bike. Everything about the SV650 I like. There isnt another bike on the market I'd be even willing to put money on.

I agree totally. If you have the SV you don't have a use for the Ninja. It served you well. Sell it to someone who'll get as much enjoyment out of it as you did.

I ride a V-Strom 650. Same engine as the SV650, but re-tuned to take some power from the top end and put it into the mid range. Fun, reliable bikes. There are few other bikes with lower total cost of ownership and as much fun.

The only time where owning 2 bikes might make sense is if they serve 2 purposes - for instance, a dual-sport and a street-only bike. Otherwise I think you will find you ride one but not the other.

Yes and No, I have had two streetbikes forever and i can tell you there are alot of things to consider in your decision. I to own a 250 ninja and i have my dedicated "fast bike R1" I only get my R1 out for rides with buddy's or when im leathering up and going knee dragging, the Ninja is a D.D. and a "comfortable" little beater i use to pound miles on and just cruz..

Your on a Ninja 250 now and considering adding a SV650 ? the SV is a pumped up 250 ninja ! its basically the same bike with alot more motor, there both all day comfortable sport bikes. Im guessing if you added the SV the Ninja would see little duty after you got a taste for the SV. Most of the time i would tell you if you were buying a lot different bike to hold on to both, but these two bikes are in the same catagory with only a real C.C. difference.

That same thought process acutally occured to me. Having two very capable commuter bikes is a waste to keep one of them for. I am actually buying a ZX-6R on Monday afternoon so keeping my 250 became a very practical option. Id be more than happy to keep my 65mpg bike for my main commuter when my fun/group ride bike can do 40mpg on a good day. So for the extra 25mpg the 250 is worth keeping around. Plus I still have the goal of getting 100,000 miles out of her.

I have 8 bikes total, but several are different. The rest are lifetime keepers due to sentimental reasons and the wife rides too. 3 of the 8 are hers. I also buy and flip occasionally if the profit is there, which 2 of the bikes were purchased for this reason. Sometimes I feel like I singlehandedly support the oil, battery and tire industries but it is nice to have a choice of bikes to ride depending on mood.

Recently the only rideable street bike (for one reason or another) was the '73 Honda CB500 when a buddy wanted to ride his brand new bike. I was the one that people talked to at gas stations etc. His bike was over $20,000 and mine is less than $1,000 total after paint and parts.

Enjoy that ZX ! great bikes too ! although.... if i was going to point you in a any direction as far as 600's go.. the 06 and newer CBR 600 RR's are pretty much my favorite and pretty hard to beat.

I picked up that ZX-6 on Monday and woooo its a freaking dream come true of a bike. Its just a blast to ride and luckily for me I am keeping my Ninja 250. This ZX-6 gets about the same mileage as my Yaris and at premium gas prices this thing will take the back seat to my 87 octane 65mpg 250 for commuting. 600 for fun/group rides, 250 for everything else lol.

What do you guys that think one bike is enough do when you find your battery has gone bad and it won't start or have a flat tire? Go out and jump in the dumb car? I can't have that. I need at least two motorcycles just in case one is not ridable for any reason. Also keeping junk around can turn to gold after the years pass. I had 2 1972 Kawasaki H2s, just in parts, some wheels, carbs, frames, electrics, and a 1973 H2 that was utter junk, missing half the bodywork, what was there was poor, 30,000 miles, no titles, not running. I was offered $2900 for this mess. Heck yes, gold in someones eyes I guess.

the 2nd bike does you no good to get big parts for the 1st bike.
you cant carry a new battery home for the 1st bike on the 2nd bike? (well maybe you can depends on size/weight) or a new tire either. tube you can probably do.

yes i have 2 bikes, but they are not both street. nor are they both dirt.
1 street
1 dirt

used to have dual purpose, that just means its bad at both.

I'd make the 250 a trackday beater, myself. Carefully wrap and stash all of the street equipment for it. When you decide to make the SV a trackday beater, rehab the 250 and sell it, do the same with the SV street equipment. Repeat this cycle as necessary.

Never underestimate the power of bungee cords, 550 cord, and determination.
