I was wondering if there is anything to gain (or any risk) if I were to replace the existing oil filter on my 3VZE '91 4Runner with a larger capacity oil filter. The stock model sure is tiny. For example, the aftermarket 3614 (FRAM designation) could be replaced by a 3600. It is about an inch longer, but all other dimensions (threads) and values (e.g., bypass valve pressure) are identical. For example, I could use the Purolator Pure One in the larger size and be less concerned about pressure loss due to restrictive filter media.

i would try a V8 oil filter, a 90915-YZZB5, 90915-20004, or 90915-YZZD3. The Toyota filters, except for the YZZB5 have more filter material and better bypass/anti-drainback valves than the Fram you're using now.

What about going one step further and use a Purolator PL 30001 ( 3.6 DIA X 5 inches long ) it holds 30 fl oz with the exact same gasket and thread size ? Check that any oversized filter you go with will not hit anything stationary during a rough idle. What oil do you use dino , synth or blend ? Plan on extending your oil change interval with the oversized filter ?

If your Toyota uses a Fram 3614, the question is, Can you use something of a larger diameter? If a larger(I call it "std" dia) will cause no clearance problems, you can use something like the Fram PH-16(for cross ref only!)/Pure One PL-14670/Wix 51085/AC-Delco PF-13. These filters are about 1/2" longer than the Fram PH-3614 filter, all are the larger("std") diameter.

For something just a little longer, still full diameter, cross reference from the Fram PH-43.

For the full size version, ~5" long & std dia, the Fram PH-8A(cross ref only!)/Motorcraft FL-1A or equivalent should give you *lots* of filtration media compared to the teacup size 3614.

Al the filters named above have the correct thread & gasket size to substitute for the little 3614/equiv.

Some of the Toyota OEM filters look really good- maybe one of those.

If you can get a hold of some NOS Lexus filters, the 90915-20004, not the "new" 90915-YZZD3, i would jump all over it.
