Bosch Premium Filter: Toyota Oversized Filter 3422

Walmart Canada recently had on sale the Bosch Premium oil filters, so I picked up a couple for my 1998 4Runner (3.4L V6 5VZFE engine) and two Fords that my parents own.

The correct filter for the 5VZFE Toyota 4Runner is the 3330, but some Googling shows that some people use the 3422 as an oversized filter on their Toyotas in lieu of the 3330.

I am wondering if anyone has experience with running an oversized oil filter on their 5VZFE or in general. I figure the benefit of an oversized filter would be increased efficiency due to more filter area and lower pressure restriction. Can it cause any harm, and is there anything I need to be aware of?

Coincidentally, the 3422 is also used on both my parents' Fords, so another advantage for me is that I only have to stock up on one kind of filter.

Using a larger filter does have some minor pluses. But make sure you have the right one and have the physical room on the engine so it doesn't hit anything.

My recors also show that the 3422 is the over-size replacement for the 3330.

I used the #3422 on my Avalon, which has a 1MZ-FE engine. I ran it for 11,492 miles and it worked out great.

I use Bosch Premium 3422 on LS400, the filter is mounted horizontal and plenty of room. There is no negative using larger filter.

where /how can u get a list of oversize filters for an application

I am sure there is someone here who can show you a place. For me, I got my basal filter for the Avalon, which is a Fram PH3614. I went to the Wix filter lookup site and found the thread size and gasket diameters. Click on the Wix filter and it will show you. Write them down. Then I compared filters as I encountered them. The PH8A Fram and PH3600 series matched. So the TG3600 and TG8A will work. So will the Fram Ultras that match those numbers. I worked from there and found that for instance the Purolator Pure One PL20195 will fit too, and the Bosch 3422.

Any filter can be put on the Wix filter lookup and it will list a comparable WIX filter, & show you the thread size and gasket dimensions. Go from there.
