Hey Guys,
Great Site. Very glad I found it.

Currently Im doing 3,000 OCI's on my 2000 Ford Explorer SOHC v6, running a FL-1A Filter and Castrol GTX.

I was just wondering which larger Filter(s) you guys could reccomend that would fit onto my truck.

thanks in advance

If you want to go with synthetic media filters use either a donaldson p169071 or fleetguard lf3487 in the Fl1a equivalent size. These two filters filter down to 7 microns nominal and 15 microns absolute. I use the donaldson on my mopar and it keeps the oil extremely clean.

I'm going by very distant memories here, but isn't the FL-1A already a "big can" filter? If so, you may already have a large amount of media goin' on (total media area is what you're after -- can size isn't near as relevant).

You can e-mail those firms that Dan4510 has mentioned, asking about the media areas for those specific filters. That will provide you with some good comparison points.

P.S. I don't know your driving habits, but have you considered increasing your OCIs? In a newer vehicle, depending on whether "Severe Service" or not, 3,000 might be a cake walk for your oil, with another 1-2K viable..? Just a thought...

It's already one of, if not the, biggest filters for a gas engine. You may find one longer, but then you might run into clearance problems. I'd just stick with what you got, it's a good filter and should be plenty big.

The FL-1A is already a huge filter by modern standards. The next step for you to get to longer OCIs would be to start doing oil analysis and pick your oil carefully. Your filter is a good one and plenty big IMO.

I would look at the Used Oil Analysis section and find which oils seem to be giving people low wear and long intervals on your engine.

I am running the Puro L40017 on my '95 F150 300 I6 and have two Fleetguard LF697s on hand. These cross ref with the Motorcraft FL299 and are about 7 inches long, vs the 5.5 inch FL1A. I intend to run FL1As on my wife's Aerostar 3.0 which specs a FL400s, but I believe (will check) the gasket flange on both engines is the same size and so it should work fine. The bigger filters have better flow rates, presumably due to the larger media area.

ok thanks for the replies everyone

ive done some scouting around the local stores and wal-mart and the filters that this area (Southern NH) carries are: Motorcraft, Fram, AC Delco, SuperTech, STP, Bosch, and PureOne.

I have looked for the FL299 Motorcraft that was reccomended, but havent found anything larger then the FL1A that I'm currently running.

Unless anyone has any other suggestions, Ill likely just stick to the FL-1A.

My local PepBoys, AutoZone, and Murrays Discount Auto did not carry then, nor would they order them. Advance Auto Parts ordered the Purolator for me and had it the next day for about $6. Interesting thing, the Puro FL1A equivalent has the bypass valve in the closed end of the can, but the bigger Purolator has it in the threaded end. I think Advance had the bigger in Fram in stock, but I decided against that particular brand. My local Ford/Sterling dealer has the large Fleetguard in stock for about $6 and a local auto parts store has the larger Wix for $11. See if your local parts store will special order the Purolator for you, or check a big trucks parts supplier. Of course your local Ford dealer should be able to order it, likely at a hefty price though.

My 4.0 SOHC Ranger calls for an 820S, which is already pretty big. Fatter but shorter than an FL1A. Does an FL1A fit okay, and is it really any bigger?

No the 820 is an entirely different filter. I don't know of any oversize filters for this application.

I didn't think so either, so maybe this guy has a 4.0 OHV and not a 4.0 SOHC. As far as I know all the 4.0 SOHC engines use an 820S.

I thought so too so I checked the Motrocraft site and the 2000 4.0L SOHC's used the FL-1A filter and not the newer FL-820S. Wife has a 2002 4.0L SOHC and it uses the FL-820S. I wish they kept the bigger filter but I guess Ford is consolidating it's oil filters and the FL-820S seems to be used on more and more of their engines.

yeah, ive got the 4.0 SOHC
likely just gonna stick with the fL 1 A as I dont think I even have the necessary clearance to fit one of the larger ones.
