The manual says the (max) oil level should be 1/2" below the fill hole one my 2001 GMC truck.

What would happen if I filled it to the fill hole; foaming, poor fuel mileage, blown seals, catastrophic disaster,...?

I can't think of anything really adverse.

The rear takes a little less than 2-1/2 quarts. I would rather put in 2-1/2 quarts so I don't have any leftover lube the second time. The 1/2 quart left over from one refill will be used on the next.

I've always filled mine till it started dripping out. The level will probably drop some once you start driving it.
