Over filled half quart

Over filled half quart on a 97' Chevy PU, 4.3L V6...
Is it OK to let it be? Thanks.

(I "searched" but different engines were asked about)

No big deal. Leave it in. You could over fill by 1 quart and it wouldn't hurt. most of the oil is in the heads when the engine is running.

I think you're fine, what are you going by the stated capacity or the dipstick?

x2..i always run mine 1/4 to 1/2 over,remember when that engine is running there's allot of oil being removed from the pan pumped up to the heads and other places.

I've added 5 qts to a 4.5 qt Ford 3.0L sump for years, no problems in 175,000 miles.

+ half quart is better than - half quart of oil.

I most of the oil in a running engine is in the head, you have severe problems.
But that 1/2 qt. over is mostly a mental issue that can bother you.
Try thinking of that 1/2 qt. over the whole area of the oil pan - it is only 1/16" -1/8" more.

I agree! I always like to slightly overfill my engines and I would never run them a half quart low. In fact I top up the oil to keep mine ABOVE the full line at all times!

I noticed this also, and I usually keep mine just over full, maybe a 1/4qt. over.

Glad this thread is here, because, even though I've been doing oil changes for over 10 years, I accidentally overfilled my wife's 07 Chevy Equinox with PP 5w30 by about 6 ounces or so. Some would have you believe going even an ounce over is horrible. Thanks to BITOG, I now know better. I feel better knowing I didn't damage an engine. By the way, this is the first time I can recall actually doing this!

I've put in 5 quarts in the recommended 4.5 quart sump of the 3 ever since the first oil change. No problems.
