Out of Penn Ultra...now what for my Wrangler 3.6?

I finally find a perfect oil for my Jeep and it is essentially (for all practical purposes) discontinued. is there another oil that is as good and clean? Should I switch to Penn Platinum or is there a better oil that meets the Chrysler spec? I do go offroad and things get pretty hot at altitude, so I wanted a good synthetic. Crawling along steep slopes on hot days with little airflow heats up the engine and tranny pretty badly. Am really bummed that I cannot find PU...

Pennzoil Ultra is available at Pep Boys, at least in So Cal, but the price is high at $9.xx/qt.

Amazon has PU too, if you subscribe then the price is about $42-43 a case of 6 quarts with free shipping.

PP shouldn't be a huge step down, Red Line is top of the line oil, and Amsoil has some excellent stuff, as well. Perhaps call around a bit and see if any Walmarts have any Penn Ultra near you.

Whatever synthetic is on sale.

The Chrysler 3.6 is far from a technological marvel requiring top-shelf oil. I'd be much more concerned with the ATF rather than the engine oil.

If your oil is getting hot (250F+) stepping up a grade might be a good idea.

Mobil 1 doesn't carry Chrysler spec, so I wouldn't use it while under warranty.

PP or QSUD would both be great choices. I'm running QSUD in our Wrangler. (Ours is a 2011 with the 3.8 and calls for 5W-20)

That's SRT. Is it the same Chrysler Spec?

I really can't say for sure since I've only seen pics of the stuff. I know its made for the hemi's.

Thanks, some good options here. I would like to double-check the Chrysler spec on whatever I use- just covering all bases since I am under warranty. As far as Amsoil goes, is the base stock and add pack as good as the PU? Not sure what the UOAs have shown for that, but the PU was fantastic. Will look into these options- the Amazon one seems to be the cheapest. I was admittedly pretty shocked when I walked into two Wal Marts and saw no PU. I asked the guys at the auto desk (and no surprise here) they did not even know what PU was. I only go there for oil.

Does Amazon sell the regular (non-Euro) grades of PU? I've only seen the Euro stuff on there.

However, the oil store sells the regular PU grades. It's about $42/case + shipping.

My local Walmarts still carry PU just as they always have.

I'm still trying to figure out why WM pulled the Ultra. As far as pricing, there's still all the varieties of M1 including the EP...which is even pricier. I noticed that several of the WM's around here also had Edge w/Titanium on the clearance shelf (same price as the Ultra). I've got enough of a stash now for over 2 years (I do about 7 changes a year...5 on the van and 2 on the Suzuki...drive a lot of miles for work but almost all highway...gonna extend the OCI's) but if SOPUS discontinues the Ultra (despite their claims) I'll be looking for another oil as well.

Amazon has cases of 5W40 and 5W30 in Euro formula, 5W20 and 10W30 regular formula.

I am not a fan of long OCI oils (15K-25K) because the oil still gets dirty, though they must have strong detergents and anti-wear add packs. I change at 8K-10K or so, and just prefer strong base stocks with good add packs for that OCI or slightly more. PU was perfect for that and apparently very shear-stable too Since I wheel at high altitude (not rocks crawling but high passes and tough trails) I need to find a similar oil. I'll try to get a stash online first, and then figure out what to do when I run out. There are plenty of options.

I switched back to Valvoline Synpower - always had great success with it, just I don't go beyond 5000 mile OCIs because it's a lower TBN of 8.7 instead of 12.

It stinks that Walmart stopped carrying PU

That Synpower may also be a good option. I hear it has very good anti-wear properties. On the Jeep, I am doing 5,000-6,000 mile OCIs for now, so 5,000 is not a problem.

The 4Runner is so easy on oil that I can go 10,000 but at 7,000, I get a bit edgy and change it. It must be that lazy V8 and the conservative way I drive, but at 5,000, the oil still looks clean when I check it. Heck, it revs at about 2,000 RPMs at 70 mph.

If I had a 2012 Rubicon, I would first make sure I stayed in the specified weight of 5w20 for warranty purposes.

If I were the OP, I'd just run PP and call it a day.
