The car is a 2004 Volvo XC70. My front differential(angle/bevel gear???) is leaking oil where the CV shaft goes into it. I have a wet film all over the housing. I have a dealer purchased warranty that expires this month so I'm thinking this should be corrected. If it is seeping now it will only get worse with time. I noticed the film doing an oil change last week. No drips on the floor yet. Will something like this normally be covered under a warranty? What do you guys think:

I wouldn't worry one bit about that seal if I had to repair it on my own dime, seems to be holding up fine for being 8+ years old. But since you have a warranty, I would push to see if they will fix it, but id say there's a 95% chance they will say no.

axle seals should be replaced if they are leaking. even though you have an extended warranty through your dealer, it more than likely is a 3rd party warranty. your dealer's service department would have to get approval for the repair from the warranty company.
read your contract to ensure that axle seals are covered. with most warranty contracts, if the parts aren't listed, they are not covered. also make sure that you are not out of your warranty by mileage.

I think the warranty will not cover this as a leak since no oil is dripping. A close look at your picture showed me that nothing is wrong here.

Needs a bevel gear or at least a reseal. Mine did that and lost AWD. Volvo sells a seal kit that you have to take the bevel gear out and reseal it under a TSB. There is a collar that is supposed to break before the bevel gear that should be replaced when the gear is removed.

Mine actually had pieces of gear floating inside and had no AWD.

A little leakage is good. A little dampness indicates the seal is getting lubed, which helps it's life.
Spray it down with brake cleaner, and note the rate of seepage.
Only takes a minute.
There doesn't seem to be a problem - this is kinda normal and OK.

Really? You lost your AWD? Sounds expensive!!! Did your gear box run out of fluid completely?

You might need a different dealer. A friend's Prius had far less seepage than this from the axle seal and they were able to have it covered under extended warranty.

You could spray some oil on there to make it look worse.
Then show it to them.
Weaseling out of a warranty thing is wrong for them to do.

But a little dampness really is not a problem.

Cost $100 for the extended warranty deductable. The parts were around $1500. There was no fluid left in the unit. I still had FWD though.
