I have a source to buy the following premium oil filters at the listed price plus a nominal shipping charge:

Fram Pro Series Synthetic, $4.67 each, must buy 6
Castol SFX Premium, $4.67 each, must buy 6
Pennzoil Platinum HPZ, $4.67, can buy singles
Mobil 1, $5.18, can buy singles

Fram makes the FPS Synthetic as a twin to the Fram Ultra without the grippy cap. Champion Labs makes the Mobil 1. Not sure who makes the Castrol and Pennzoil ones.

I plan to use each filter at most for two 5-7K change intervals, but at these prices I could change them at each oil change. Which choice would you make and why?

Champ labs and Fram are the same company. Mobil 1 isn't a full synthetic media (though good filter).

I would run the Fram Pro Series. Looks like a great price for a great filter.

The syn filters made like the Frams /Donaldson types are the state of the art in filter media. The M1 is old tech that being said the most important thing an oil filter can do is not fall apart. I doubt 99.999% will never notice any difference in engine life because most will never wear out an engine unless there is a problem with maintenance. The Air filter is where and filter concern should be.

If the Fram really is an Ultra clone, it would be my choice.
These look like jobber market versions of premium filters offered at a price a shop could swallow.
Where did you find these filters at these prices?
I suppose we could resort to a search and find them, though.

The Pennzoil HPZ is Purolator made, similar to the Puro Synthetic (which is decent, but specs lower than the Ultra, 99% @ 25 microns). The Castrol SFX, like the Mobil 1, is a blend of syn & natural (cellulose) fibers. My experience with the Fram Ultra is that it is at least as good as the best you could buy-such as Donaldson Endurance, Royal Purple, and Amsoil EaO-for a fraction of the price!

Fram Pro Synthetic if you're wanting to buy in large quantities.

Pennzoil Platinum if you just want a few. Pennzoil filters are Purolator made.

And yes, where are you getting these prices? Haha

They are only sold in cases of six. I can only use the 6607 and 7313. If you want a case of six, I've seen them on eBay for less than $36 including shipping.

The only filter listed that actually has fully synthetic media is the Fram, so pick that one. The rest are lower tier but decent filters with cellulose blended with some glass fibers, not full syn.

You forgot about the nearly double dirt holding capacity of the Fram vs. all the others. Use that high capacity as extra margin, or go two oil changes on the same Fram Ultra pro series.

The Castrol SFX is most likely identical to the M1. Get a case of Castrol and an M1 and cut them open for us

The Fram Pro Syntehtic/Ultra is most likely better than the above.

Castrol does have a snazzy green paint job.

Even though you can buy M1's individually, the shipping charge makes more sense to buy by the case anyway. And since the Castrol is cheaper and looks cooler, and is the same besides that paint job, I'd take the SFX over M1.

I found some FPS filters on ebay for $6.xx each if you buy 6.

I'm thinking about ordering them since the grippy end is about the only thing keeping me from using the fram ultra on my expedition.

with 6 filters and 10k OCI's I'd be good to 200k.

thanks to the OP for mentioning the FPS .... they look to be a gem!

Really? Can you post a link to this data?

Mobil 1 filters are rated at 28g dirt holding capacity per ISO 4548-12.

Nygotha, they got you fooled. The PH8A (and your reference is 8 years out of date anyway) figure of 28g is for that one big filter only.

Bottom line: You can bet Fram Ultra's double layer of full synthetic depth filtering media will trounce the cheaper paper blend Mobil1 uses. And I'll let you google yourself silly finding Fram's claims for the Ultra, or find Motorking's data yourself, your choice! Have at it.
