Opinion on "express self scan" checkouts?

If they don't trust me, don't make me go to the self checkout....

I know not to go when I have alcohol, OTC medications, or potential huffing agents such as carb cleaner, etc.

That is a problem on featherweight items, when the scale has to handle much more weight than measuring things that sensitively.

I'll use them when they save me time and I don't have something weird to scan.

All of the local Fred Meyer stores (Kroger division) have recently eliminated their staffed express lanes in the grocery portion of the store. While speaking to my local store's manager about it during a recent visit, he said that it was a Kroger directive, certainly not something he would have mandated. One issue he brought up with self-checkout, and the soon to arrive Scan & Go, was the problem with "shrink" (i.e. stealing in retail-speak) because the store is assuming (or hoping) everything is being scanned. Another problem is the amount of staffing the self-checkout requires in the form of attendants. This store normally has two on duty, usually quite busy clearing up kerfuffles of some sort with scanning items, or balky terminals. And they only have six terminals.

How are they going to police alcoholic beverages, unless they remove beer and wine from the grocery section.
...... and who's going to prevent us from purchasing non-grocery items like beer and wine, cigarettes too, at those self-serve checkouts that are no longer assisted by Kroger employess?

I can scan my own stuff faster than most staff do and not having to deal with someone is great. lol. Granted unless something messes up or scans wrong, thats where it gets annoying. I say, if you want someone to scan it, go to the cashier instead!

The computer will freeze until someone comes and checks your ID.

Or it lets you get to the end but wont let you pay until they check the ID.

Trashy people here let their 4 year old kid scan (ever so slowly), even when there's an adult waiting in line behind them.

They let their kid do it once, then can't say "no" ever.

My supermarket puts these little yellow coupons on meat that's going to expire soon. 10% of the time when I peel them off I break the plastic, so now I have exposed raw meat on my hands. Yuck. And half the time the little slot where you toss the coupon doesn't "see" it pass by, so I'm looking around for some scrap paper to throw down the hole to trick its eye.

Other than that it works okay and I can bag stuff (or not) on my whims. I'm starting to remember PLU codes for vegetables I eat frequently.

However, I've yet to see one where they don't have a sign directing customers to form a single line and take the first available one. That at least creates less of a problem of one particular customer slowing down everyone waiting in the same line. I've been in lines where someone had a special request or where they did a price check that took 5 minutes. And in the meantime 3 other customers in other lines finished up. I really like the idea of single lines so that there's no game of guessing the fastest line.

Still - I see a lot of them that are covered with a paper bag taped to the display.

I don't mind them at Meijer, because I always have coupons, both mPerks and paper ones, and I can make sure they come off correctly. Kroger ones have to be done by the attendant (even at the U-Scan), and everything comes off at once, making it tough to tell if it worked correctly or not.

I was in my local grocery store last week. It has regular and express self-check outs. We had a lot of stuff in our cart. A strange women with 5 things got behind us in line. Not sure why she didn't go to the self check out as that was open. Shortly, we found out when she loudly proclaimed her opposition to self-check out. I would have let her go ahead of us but since she was so adamant to take a stand, she could wait until after us.

If it gets me out of the store faster, I'm all for self check out. With rising minimum wage standards, self check out will only increase.

The rest were self-checkouts. I managed to find a replacement headlight bulb and then headed to the self-checkouts. I had left my wallet in my vehicle, but had a $20 bill in my pocket. After waiting about 10 minutes in the self-checkout line (the single checkout line with a live person was much longer), I managed to scan my headlight at the self-checkout and proceeded to pay.....only to find out that it did not accept cash!
Of the ten self-checkouts, only two of them accepted cash and I had to wait in line all over again.
Okay, I can see their plan to eliminated cashiers. But having their plan to eliminate cash sales really burned my buns that night.

All the ones here accept cash...I wonder if they were either out of change or the cash box was full.

I'd happily pay a premium to use self-checkout. Much easier, faster, and much less hassle.

Perhaps it has to do with the fact that she doesn't work there. I remember one comedian making a joke about the self check out. Wait I didn't know I worked here, I better get on the ball. If the cashier isn't busy I'm always going to use that over the self checkout.

Great! You are helping eliminate jobs. Just what the stores want. Unless there is no other option, I will always go to the line with a checker, a few minutes wait isn't a big deal for me. Sounds like the majority of responders must be so busy that they can't wait in line.
Remember, however poor paying it is, it's a job you are helping to eliminate by going to the self checkout.

The ones at meijer seem to work way better than the Walmart ones. I like them, I'm usually running in there at 4am after work, nobody wants face to face human interaction at 4am.

Edit: my wife thinks they are dumb and won't use them if she doesn't have too... but if they're empty and the cashiers are full she will.

The stores who offer this type of service tend to add better services like ordering online and running product to outside and easy pickup spawning other jobs. Stores that keep the status quo go the way of do do like Toys r us, Sears, Kmart ...... Better to adapt to consumer needs and desires then stick your head in sand.
