I used Golden Spectro once upon a time and liked it. I've heard that they make the BMW labeled oil in NA, too. I'd expect their full synthetic to be good stuff.

I think most on here use car oils.

I couldn't afford to ride if i paid the premium $$ they want for bike lubricants. Ive never had a problem with automotive lubricants so Ive never even tried motorcycle specific oils.

You couldn't pay me to use car oils in a motorcycle. Regardless of whatever spec whatever car/diesel oil has going for it.

...ya really gotta spend some time in the motorcycle UOA archives here. Of course if you'd rather not let facts get in the way...

...carry on, I guess.

As fuel tanker man suggested poke around in the m/c UOA section- you may be surprised. Rotella, Havoline, Pennzoil, and Valvoline have "car" oils that have been proven by UOA to work in m/c engines as well as or better than boutique m/c specific oils. I've been riding since the 70's & always used plain ol' PYB or VWB in 20W-50 in my bikes and never saw a single oil-related failure. Bought a new Harley in '07 and convinced myself that it "needed" m/c synthetics because of the heat generated by the lean-running Twin Cam 96 engine. A few years later I started researching UOA's for TC 96 engines and found that Valvoline VR1 racing dino (a car oil) is turning in UOA's with lower wear metals than Mobil 1 V-Twin and HD Syn3 synthetics in the TC96 engines.
Needless to say I've dumped the $10+/qt boutique oils and went with VR1 "car" oil; better protection and it's 1/4 the price.
As they say- the truth will set you free...

You are correct that you would NOT want to use a "car oil" with "Energy Conserving" on the API label. Those have friction modifiers and should NOT be used in bikes. The can mess up the wet clutch in a bike. Heavy Duty "Diesel" oils have and are VERY successfully used in all kinds of bike
applications including racing bikes. Several of them are now
Rated JASO "MA" (i.e. specifically for motorcycle applications)
Rotella T-6, and the 15W-40 "diesel" oils (generally called HDEO's on here) work very well in motorcycles.

SOME "car oils", mainly in 10W-40 and 20W-50 also can be used in bikes but won't have as high a quality additive package as the HDEO, particularly in the anti-wear department. Those "car oils" are NOT "Energy Conserving" and are generally compatible with bike wet clutches.

There is nothing "wrong" with bike specific oils, but the price is much higher than oils like Chevron Delo 400, Rotella T, and Mobil Delvac, etc.

fule tanker man- i have seen t6 uoa's on a few sportbikes used on track and road and they were not favorable to me using it. In these same bikes i have seen incredible UOA's on motorcycle specific oil under severe track use (3 track days) and street use up to 6 grand. The t6 uoa were worse than uoa's on motorcycle specific mineral oils. I have an 11 zx6r, 07 fz1 and past bikes were 04 gsxr600 and 03 sv650. I see no reason to move away from moto specific syn oils i use in my fz1 when i have no issue paying under $10 a quart for mobil racing 4t at autozone. The money is not an issue. I'm looking at trying something different in my new bike so i am trying spectro platinum.

I kinda want the FZ1, how do you like yours? I wish they would put the crossplane engine from the new R1 into the FZ1, i want a pure sportbike engine in a slightly more comfortable bike for distance riding, without losing any of the performance.

I don't really worry about my engine, as I have never worn out a bike. my 2000 SV650 has 22k on it, runs like new on a lifetime of 15w-50 mobil1.

the 10w-40 M1 is great oil, and affordable. If 15w-50 wasnt available in 5qt packs at walmart for so long I would have used the 10w-40.

I don't know why you want to use spectro over mobil1, but i know a lot of people who swear by those high $$ lubes. I'm just not one of them. Currently very happy with $19/gallon Schaeffers 5w-50.

I love the Fz1. It's a pure sportbike motor in my fz1. it's a previous generation r1 motor. I went minus 1 on the front sprocket with a 520 kit and it's perfect. MPG went way down with sprocket change though. I just put yamalube 15/50 full syn in the fz1. Wife got me an oil change kit from yamalube for fathers day. I would not want a crossplane crank motor in my fz1. That motor gets extremely hot. I've ridden a new r1 lots of miles on the street.
