I was at the Aspen Grove Apple Computer Store today and I discovered that you can buy a boxed OpenOffice open source program there. You can download this software for free on the internet but it is large and I don't have high speed internet. So I figured fourty bucks was not bad compared to spending something like four hundred dollars for Microsoft Office.

This OpenOffice is great! It will open Microsoft documents and you can type up letters and memos, work on spreadsheets, etc. Heck, you don't need Virtual PC or Microsoft Office! To top everthing else there was also the GIMP program included, NeoOfficeJ, and web browsers. I don't have any experience with this GIMP program. If it is good enough and can replace Photoshop to a large extent then I will probably not upgrade Photosop anymore. The open source community is great!

We need more competition when it comes to software and operating systems.

I too love openoffice but somebody could download it and send you a cd for less then 40

I too have Gimp and it is not up to par with adobe photoshop but for most applications it far exceds what you will ever need and there is online tutorials for it up the yazoo just do a search.

I use it and I find it to be an excellent product.

If you download it and like it, please donate to their cause. Anything will do. We need more products like these in the marketplace.

Thankfully government agencies here and abroad are adopting this software which will only improve it. I have used both mostly just OpenOffice on linux and think it more than suffices for my needs.

Despite what Microsoft says, open source is eating at them especially in the lucrative server software (ie Linux) arena.

Also Mozilla use is climbing as its a decent browser now.
