Hello. I've never seriously considered cutting open a filter. I'm usually working on common cars with common filters and typical OCI's.
I thought this one was a little unusual.

Car is an '04 Jaguar S-Type with a 3.0L. The Jaguar recommended OCI is 10k miles. I bought it in September with a little over 90k on it. Apparently the previous owner drove it sparingly over the last year+.
The oil change sticker on the windshield said next due at ~94k, but the date is 9/11/13. The same date was written on the filter so it seems this filter has been on for quite a while. No idea what oil was in it.

This one doesn't look so good:

The blob of gunk in the bottom is a little concerning as well.

wrap some paper towels around the media to wick the oil out. Remove towels and repeat. Closely inspect for integrity esp around the seam pleat and adjacent.

Looks good. The 20195/3600/51516 size filters are probably my all time favorites, as the construction on them seems above average across all brands.

I use them wherever I have a 3/4-16 application rather than a 10241/FL1A/14670, etc.

You are one of those everyday drivers as some companies call it. You only need to use the everyday oil filters. I drive every other day so use something else.
When drying the filter off, press in it hard, some folks really really want to see a Fram with tears.

But an FL-1A holds a quart... don't you lose, like, 1/2qt of oil capacity by using an FL400S?

Nobody presses a Puro too hard, right?
