Onkyo and Denon

I actually found a Denon what was it "AVS-200" put out for trash. And if I had a workbench and time.. probably could have made it work. It was a Denon or an .. I am misremembering the model number but I believe it was a Denon receiver. Put out in the trash.

That JVC is a PC-XC60 and it still works. One channel makes poor connection but I believe that can be fixed if I ever look at it.

I drive past the former Sharp building off 287 sometimes. It no longer says Sharp. Sharp went to Hi-Sense in 2016 now I think they are just gone. Sharp was awesome.

Kenwood.. used to be a poor quality name? VERY Inflated wattage numbers. Sherwood too IIRC ...

I have a car amp. 300 watt one channel (300.1) "Mono Class D." Never opened. Should I un-box it another thread? (Jumped to car audio)
Kennwood is now part of JVC, but for a while JVC's been sort of merged with Matsushita/Panasonic.

Yeah Matsushita was parent company.. JVC is Japan Victor Corporation. When did that take place?

I had a JVC head unit last year.. loved it.

Sony head unit this year.. even better.

Have to select one for the Subaru soon...

I started with a Sherwood stereo reciever and Warfdale speakers. Upgraded over the years to a upper end Marantz quad receiver, Teac real-to-real, Pioneer turntable and Bose 901 series III (upgraded with series VI). Ended up with a Yamaha RX-V870 receiver, JBL 4312 Control Monitor speakers and Dbx decoders, expanders and companders. Still have the lot, but it's wasted on my shot ears.
You can't beat the upper end stuff like Macintosh or Crown, but if you don't have an unlimited budget it's hard to match Yamaha quality. Agree that Kenwood is bottom end. Sansui not much better - everyone I knew that had a blown receiver had a Sansui.

I think Yamaha overall is great as well. In fact I would recommend Yamaha anything to anyone who has no idea what to buy. One thing with Yamaha is I really like the "Natural Sound" sound, but some people don't. But I quite enjoy the specific somewhat flat Yamaha sound.

I've had this for about 15 years.

Never opened.

350W of "dynamic power" is going to mean very low output RMS, FWIW.
I thought it was 300 watts RMS? "300.1"

I was going to ask you how "good" that amp was.

Was originally going to run a sealed 10" Alpine sub... Would that do for maybe going in. The Subaru?

Yeah, 200W RMS at 4ohms, hence that whole "dynamic power" angle. You'll note the 350W is under minimum load, lol, so a wholly useless spec.

Yes, that amp would be best fit to run something where sound quality isn't a concern, based on those THD figures. A sub with dual voice coils, you could load it down to 2 ohms to get the most out of it.

Just like HTHS is the most important spec in oil.. RMS is the only number worth mentioning in audio. Would you say?

Been known a number that's not an RMS number is useless.

What is strange to me is that 300 Watts RMS is 2 Ohms.. 200 watts is at 4 ohms. Isn't that backwards ?

Might be time for me to ACTUALLY USE THIS AMP in 2021. Maybe 2022. But before I'm 40...

No, output goes up the lower the impedance. My Bryston is ~270W/channel (>500W bridged) at 8ohms. It would be significantly higher than that at 4ohms, as I noted earlier. But, the lower impedance is harder for an amp to drive and brings up THD, as you can see on the specs. Many crazy car audio amps will handle wickedly low impedance, like 0.5 ohms and thousands of watts, but that's not for SQ, that's for bass.

Hmmmm.

Yeah, that amp has stayed in the box because if it goes in, it goes as part of a whole system. Speakers replacing whatever was in the car, new head unit, new sub . What sub do you think it would go well with?

If that's the amp you are going to use, just get that cheap sub, it'll be fine. Also, no need to upgrade all the speakers unless you are really going to town. If the rest of the system sounds OK but is just missing a bit on the low end, a sub will wake it up a bit. I'd avoid spending more than a vehicle is worth on audio components, which is easy to do if one gets carried away.

I started off my stereo life with an NAD 3020 integrated amp and KEF 101 speakers. KEF speakers were being used by the BBC at that time as studio monitors. If you've never heard of either of these components I'd suggest you read up on them, they're both still considered quite respectable except for the lack of deep base. In those days there were no sensible subwoofers. The ones I tried only muddied the otherwise excellent sound.

So I graduated to Mirage M1 speakers. They're very large towers and "don't need no subwoofers". Absolute Sound considered them the best speakers in the world at the time. For quite a while I powered the M1s with a Cyrus Two integrated amp. An even better sound but clearly not enough power.

So I bought a (used) Mark Levinson No 23 Power Amp: 200 Watts/channel RMS continuous into 8 Ohms. I looked and looked but could never find a used Mark Levinson preamp, and I wasn't going to pay the very steep price for a new one.

So I bridged the analog and digital worlds and got a preamp "for free" with a Benchmark DAC preamp. It all sounds pretty good. When we want convenience we use a SONOS Connect as the data source. When we're seriously listening, we use an ancient PCM 7000 as a CD disc drive with the digital data all processed by the Benchmark DAC, or occasionally an album played by a NAD 9000 moving coil cartridge and a Technics turntable into an analog port on the Benchmark.

Not absolutely top end but pretty good. And yes I could probably improve on my system, but only by spending big bucks, and I'm not sure I could hear the difference.

There's something going on with that head unit. Sometimes the speakers sound "decent;" sometimes they sound weak, low, and distorted. Like sometimes it has power and sometimes it doesn't.

I personally think the other speakers are blown.

I'm "into" my car now so.. I'm liking the "cheap but complete" approach. Head unit upgrade so I can have my Bluetooth is a must.
