If everyone only bought 100% American made by 100% American owned company, we would all be running around in just Fruit of the Loom with AR-15s (but be sure you don't use Russian or Chinese ammo in it) ... those are still US made by US owned companies.

labman has a dream that the US will somehow revert back to like it was in 1960 ... but sadly, that will never, ever happen in today's global world economy, and the ever increasing downfall of US companies ran by greedy fat cat's trying to get the companies stock price up and big fat bonuses in their pockets.

The Chinese make AR-15's as well. Both Norinco and the Republic of Taiwan (Former Republic of China) manufacture AR15 variants.

Even Iran is making an AR-15 based bullpup.

In the age of globalization its hard to buy with a conscience since so many hands are in so many pies. I go with the best bang for the buck. I will usually pay a few bucks more to avoid products from countries I dont care for if another product of quality from a friendlier nation is available.

Yeah, I know ... my point was that you can still buy a 100% made AR-15 manufactured 100% in the US by a 100% owned US company. There are still a lot of gun manufactures that would fit labman's criteria. But, in a few years that could not hold true anymore.

Although the metal might be foreign.

Guns, Guitars, and Car Parts can be bought US made still. They are just pricey.

I love my Gibson Les Paul, but is it 1200 dollars better than the Korean Epiphone.....not really.

So just why are a few people so infatuated with Purolators? After all, other than their foreign ownership, they are only one more filter. What is their hidden agenda?

Many of the filters I've seen do not say where they are made. Some say "distributed by" a US company, probably just offices.

I agree with keeping or getting as much of that money into the US economy is a good idea, but it is getting trickier. I have 34,000 Donaldson filters in stock(plus 2000 in customs). It is an American company, so one way or another at least the profits go back into the economy.
With a high percentage of korean, japanese, and european vehicles in this market, many of their parts are not sold or made in the USA. of the 34,000 filters:
52% are made in US
24% are made in Mexico
11% in Indonesia
3% Germany
3% UK
etc. for a total of 15 countries. But they are all made to the same standard. If it didn't say on the can and box what country it was from, you'd never notice the difference.

Where some filter makers go wrong in my opinion is that instead of using the right amount of filter media for each filter, they have very few precut sizes. they stretch them around the can for the bigger ones and bunch them up on the smaller ones. They also standardize relief valves instead of having the right pressures. And make wider gaskets to "fit" more. An example is the line of Mann, like their "Multi-20" which they recommend as replacements for relief valves anywhere from 7 psi to 20. People love them here where they don't look at numbers, just the thread and gasket.

I'd rather have it made in another country than have it compromised.

All spin on filters I have looked at say made in the USA on the filter itself. If it didn't, I would put it back on the shelf. We have a wide choice of spin on filters made in America by American companies. I see no reason to buy anything else.

The cartridges are another matter. Of the 30+ I have bought for my Ecotec, I don't think a one was made in America by an American company.

That's right. they were deformed, but did not pull away from the pleats or the valve. That surprised me.

The center tubes seem a bit too malleable as well compared to other metal center tubes. A stronger center would not hurt that is for sure.

For a little extra money Fram could make a much better filter.

I have one to add to the fram problem. Changed my oil and put on a fram filter, drove about 20 miles, the oil seemed to have been spit out the seal as it was from the filter back, shut down my motor(not sure how much damage yet) and then when I tried to remove it to put the old one back on to get home, the fram filter was siezed on. Bent the filter using a filter wrench and still had to use some straping to remove it. Car never made it home yet. I am going to go after fram for this one.

I doubt you'll get any where with FRAM.
I hate fram as much as anyone, but it sounds like you over tightened that filter. To tight and you will crush the gasket and have leaks, doesn't matter what brand filter you are using.

Or the old gasket stuck to the engine and wasn't removed when the new oil filter was installed. This happens all the time with my parents' saturn using AD Delco E-cores. However, I'm aware of it and always pull the old gasket off and clean the contact area.

Im in the middle of a 5k run on valve syn. was lurking last night and came across this thread, i happen to have the heavy duty fram, (not the orange can) on the truck. I already stocked up on pure-ones and decided to go ahead and yank the fram and switch over. I didnt do the full OCI as i only have 3,000mi on the oil.
The first think i noticed about the pure-one was its shorter in length (just a observation)
I drove the truck to work and emmediately noticed my oil pressure was higher, not remarkably higher but deffinately higher.
I plan on cutting open the (i believe its a durra guard) and posting pics.
Whats the best tool for opening up a filter ?
Obviously im not a fram hater, i had one on my truck and have used many before, I decided to stock up on the pure-ones as there was so much praise on this site.
Happy to post 3,000mi pics when i get the can open.

I use a hack saw, put the filter in a Vice, carefull the frams and purolators are thin. The thinner the harder it is to cut open.

You can buy a cutter from Speedway Motors that works well. Its what I use. Cuts pretty much any oil filter from the ultra small to the large ones.
