WOW!! That's crazy.
Yesterday, I saw a field with about 200 of those things, all of them just standing there. Of course, as I drove closer, they had to fly up and cross the road. I slammed on my brakes and hit the horn to avoid them. I had one of those things tear off a rear view mirror of my pickup a couple of years ago.
They were reintroduced in our area about 25 years ago and now they do a lot more crop damage than anyone could have ever imagined. They really don't have too many natural enemies and they also eat pheasant and quail eggs. Yet people wonder why we no longer have the pheasant and quail numbers...

I could care less about pheasant- they're a European import anyway, brought over just for sport hunting. Quail- I really worry about that. Down here Bobwhite quail numbers have been really hurt by fire ants, which get into the nests and drive the hens off the eggs or attack the chicks.
We actually had two wild turkey hens hanging out on our vacant lot right in the middle of the city recently. Neighbors were freaking out- never had seen live turkeys before. sheesh.

I could care less about pheasant- they're a European import anyway, brought over just for sport hunting. Quail- I really worry about that. Down here Bobwhite quail numbers have been really hurt by fire ants, which get into the nests and drive the hens off the eggs or attack the chicks.

Technically, the pheasants were from Asia, but that doesn't matter. What matters is the nice clucking sound they give off when a group of them fly up after being pointed out by a good cocker spaniel or German shorthair. Another thing that matters is a couple of those done in a slow-cooker covered with a mushroom sauce and wine. Just be careful not to chew too hard because you might bite into some lead pellets.
