Looks like the 'population' theory is not working........

There are more than 2x the number of people in the U.S. as in Russia. Even the consolidated U.S.S.R. never had the population that the U.S. had.

No, the Soviet Union was larger than the U.S. in the seven decades of its existence. That being said, the Olympics are about human acheivement as I see it. About discipline, dedication and commitment.

No longer about East German women with mustaches.

Thanks for the correction...Russia has about 143 million (2011). Guess I was thinking about the old USSR.

I also agree with your statement the the achievement in sports is "all about discipline, dedication and commitment".

Jordan Ernest Burroughs of the
United States won the Olympic gold medal in the men's freestyle
wrestling 74kg competition on Friday. Iran's Sadegh Saeed
Goudarzi won the silver.

I have never seen a American Wrestler be so dominate as soon as he started competing on the international level.

Now I hope if continues to wrestle he does not lose his motivation to continue to be the best.

^^^If you want to go there, the very same could be said for Japan.

Do a medal search by population and see where USA and China are...and check out where New Zealand is. It's a numbers game, send enough athletes and you are sure to get plenty of medals. Do it with far fewer people and it's a lot harder.

I know first hand (by observation) just how competitive (and fierce) your country's Olympic (and otherwise) athletes are!!

I have the honor to watch your track cyclists when they come over here to train/compete at the Valley Preferred Cycling Center Velodrome in Upper Macungie, Pa. in the World Series Of Bicycling races.

Yes, let's hope that the IOC's latest testing methodologies/procedures/tech can stay ahead of the best current (and future) illegal enhancers/drugs, and masking agents for such.

Worst part of East German debacle was that most of the female athletes were not told of of the substances they were given. They trusted the doctors and trainers. Now many have cancers and other conditions.

They were literally human guinea pigs. Reminding one of the Tuskeegee experiments as well as the Nazis.

In the 2012 Olympics, USA won 104 medals. Jamaica won 12. If Jamaica had the population of the USA, they’d have won 1382 medals. China won 88 medals. If China had the population of the U.S., they’d have won 20 medals. – Neil deGrasse Tyson
