Even as a Canuck I have to say that it is *GREAT* for the sport that less-established U.S. franchises win the cup. Cities like Charlotte and Tampa and even L.A. in the last several years have raised and improved the profile of hockey in the states.

Factors why more Canadian teams aren't bringing home the cup?:

- smaller markets (only Toronto and Montreal are really big markets by U.S. standards)

- established markets (most Canadian teams could put 5 arena janitors on the ice and still sell out every night)

- less money (the exchange rate isn't bad now, but it used to be $1US - $1.60Cdn just a few years ago; and I think tickets are cheaper here too)

- The league wants success in the U.S. in order for the league and the game to grow.

- The game is simply less centred on and in Canada. Many of the best players are now American, due to the increasing popularity of the game and its attraction to high quality athletes; and many players are coming into the league from all over the world.

- Inventing and/ or dominating a sport does not guarantee eternal, exclusive success. Remember the Jays winning it all twice in the early 90's? The Expos woulda run away with it all in the strike year that came after that, too.

Did you just say pro hockey is rigged?

I kid, I kid.

I know for a fact US Pro basketball is rigged. Pretty sure.

True, but, in these Olympics at least, we're getting our ***** kicked in sports which used to be 'ours' as well.
frown.gif
(NO americans in the men's 400 meter dash final; U.S. Beach V-ball men eliminated, and we "invented" that sport; the stomp on everyone with impunity, U.S. uber-team pro ballers getting the pants scared off of them by Lithuania; etc., etc.)

What's next, a shutout in the 4x100 relay?!?
frown.gif

Lets do an update on how well the US is doing...vs. Canada

Canada: 1 Gold/ 3 Silver/ 7 Bronze
U.S. 30 G0ld/ 19 Silver/ 21 Bronze

...and the US will be able to get several more Gold or Silvers in....Mens Basketball, Womans Basketball, Womans Beach Vollyball, Men's Vollyball.....and a few others as well. You can't be dominant in every sports...all the time.

But the US is still getting beat by China.... Hey, just like in real life!

I did not say we were doing poorly overall, just pointing out that we are getting beat in some instances where, in the past, it was a 'given'/taken for granted for U.S. to win/dominate.
(IF we could take some more of those track cycling medals away from jolly ol' England, we would be WAY ahead of China right now, if that actually matters to anyone.

Today (Thursday).....we (US) are ahead of China....and I think we'll stay that way with some future gold or silvers (Woman's soccer & men's basketball)

Yeah, that $15.31 trillion debt (103% of your GDP) versus China's debt at 43.5% of their GDP certainly shows the US beating China.

China owns 8% of the publicly held US debt ($1.2 trillion), which puts it in 3rd place, just behind the Federal Reserve at $2 trillion.

You should be very concerned about China.

Ok so in real life if somebody owes me money I am concerned about them big time. If US stopped buying toys from China that would be a worry and a concern if I lived in China. Whats on tonight Olympic wise???

True, but this thread is about (Olympic) sports, not international trade/economics (although you did not bring it up initially, just reponded to that).

That being said, your fellow Canucks look(ed) REAL STRONG in many events this go-'round, stronger than I ever remember them being in the past.

WWIII? The Nuke Drop event?

But back to the non-nuclear winter Olympics, I do think China's strength here is pretty surprising. A lot of countries that have been "developed nations" a lot longer (Germany, Canada, Japan...etc) aren't doing nearly as well as China is.

Not at all (suprising).

They pour A LOT more coin into their Olympic sports programs, and start to seek out/discover kids' specialized skills/abilities at a MUCH younger age than even the old, united USSR (and surrounding eastern block nations) did back in the day. Plus, they actually have MUCH more said coin than other countries (from trade/skewed trade policies) to pour into said development programs.

This is even before one looks at the MASSIVE population pool they have from which to seek athletes.

I hadn't looked at it that way, but your logic certainly make a lot of sense
thumbsup2.gif

Obviously the population pool can't be that much of an advantage however. A quick look to India shows that having an obscene amount of people from which to draw athletes from doesn't guarantee success.

I remember (quite vividly) the competitions between the US, Canada and the USSR. To say those events were tense would be an epic understatement.

I was waiting for someone to click on the light switch. Do the math.

If China wasn't so racist and xenophobic they could have some runners move to their country and blow the world out of the water in the Olympics. So to speak.

Do a medal search by population and see where USA and China are...and check out where New Zealand is. It's a numbers game, send enough athletes and you are sure to get plenty of medals. Do it with far fewer people and it's a lot harder.

Apparently not!

USA 2 Japan 1

Another GOLD for the USA!

USA 90....China 80

Come now, while I understand your enthusiasm, 2-1 isn't exactly a blow out. Difference between this and the World Cup, Japan didn't/couldn't take advantage of their opportunities. Still, an exciting and entertaining game and I'm happy with the outcome.

Also happy that Canada got the podium with the bronze, they more than deserved it. And, I've found the women's events and subsequent stories overall to be more interesting than the mens.

As for the medal count, not much into that, more into the individual stories. It is an interesting reference point I suppose.

But, with China employing the former Soviet training model, with individual camps starting from the cradle, their success is no surprise and I expect they will continue to improve.

Yeah - the medal count doesn't interest me as much as the individual success stories.

My favorite moment so far? Seeing the twin, 4 year old, boys of Lashinda Demus (US 400m Hurdler) in the stands during the semifinals, cheering, "Go Mommy! Go!"...

Lets see if that theory holds up:

China... has more than three time the population of the U.S. ....and Russia.... population wise, is very much larger than the U.S. as well.

I can understand that the smaller countries (such as NZ) are at a disatvantage.....and any medals they get, they can be very proud of.
