Ok. heres a question. i dont really trust my Oil life Monitoring system on my truck, should i. this is the first truck i have had that had one. my dads dodge ram has one. My 2002 chevy 8.1 liter truck has one. can they be trusted or should i stick with my 3-5k oci. thanks

Do you trust all the other computer systems on your vehicle?

They puts lots of research into them and if they were not any good they wouldn't have decided to put them in the vehicles.

Most modern vehicles have OCI's higher than 5,000 miles anyway.

If you use the recommended oil, it is very accurate.

Do new GM/Chevy vehicles with OLM on them actually have oil change intervals or is it okay for warranty purposes to just change the oil when the OLM says too?

If for warranty purposes you still have to adhere to some strict schedule what is the purpose of having a OLM?

The OLM is your interval for warranty purposes.

The dealer will tell you to come in for oil changes more often because they want your money, not because its required.

Bingo!

IMHO OLM's are proving to be pretty darn trustable.

That's good advice. 12 months or OLM.

I'm sure they check the OLM to see mileages and resets if a warranty claim ever did arise that was oil-related.

Sure they can, but don't take anyone's word for it. Prove it to yourself. Just do a UOA with taking it ONCE to zero (or below 10%). Then adjust your pucker factor accordingly. We've seen, iirc, everything from 3k-13k puked out of the things depending on the type of service they see.

Yep, it doesn't hurt the engine to take the OLM down to 0% ONCE. Do a UOA, if it comes out all peaches n cream. Then you know. if the UOA sucks, then scale back accordingly.

OLM doesn't keep a history. Once reset it will clear out the data previously stored.

That's a surprise. I would think that it would be very simple (and not require too many resources) to keep a permanent record of OLM reset state readings.

For warranty keep the oil change receipts. Mr Goodwrench could come back with "Just because the OLM was reset doesn't mean the oil was changed".

GM dictates OCIs through the OLM or once every 12 months, which ever comes first.

One of the last studies I've read had one of the engineers quoting an average drain interval of 7500-8500 across the GM fleet. I've seen as low a 3300 and as high as 12800. All depends on the vehicle, engine, and its operating environment.

While I am still on the fence about following mine, I can say that I have NOT seen a UOA to support any of my concerns.

I've reset my OLM by accident once...but I knew I had to change the oil in a few weeks anyways (which I did).

So far, it's been right on....
