Stihl 009L chainsaw, I've had forever. Last spring, 1st time it would not start, beat me in the ground. I've taken pretty good care of it, 15 years plus. Anyway I tried again yesterday, nothing, I replaced with new spark plug, cleaned all up, nothing. Dipped plug in some mix gas and it fired, did this several times, it would fire up for a few seconds then spudder, was hoping after several attempts it would run, it wouldn't unless plug was dipped in some mix gas. It's not getting mix gas to run. I do know it will run when I wet the plug, just for a few seconds. I don't see a filter in the tank, any one know the basics for this old chain saw? It always would start by 2nd pull, even in the cold, most of the time. Probably take to a small engine shop, to see if worth to fix, unless any ideals here.

If it fires when you put fuel on the plug you have a carburetor problem. You might be able to Google the model Stihl you have and find a replacement carburetor. Easy enough to bolt on yourself and will be cheaper than taking it to a shop and have them rebuild it.
My Farm Boss turns 40 this yr. It has an intank filter. Sounds like you need to replace the gas line
Take the carb apart and clean the crusty old varnish out of it. Use a BBQ brush bristle
Those little engines really aren't that difficult to repair. Take it apart, figure out what is wrong with the fuel system, purchase the repair parts and you're all set.

I have that same saw and had similar symptoms. On mine the old fuel lines had rotted and the carb needed a rebuild, so I'd start there.
I've got Stihl OPE of that vintage, and, according to the local Stihl dealer, it was common for fuel lines to rot out from ethanol in the fuel. New fuel line, and switched to tru-fuel, eight years ago and I've not had a single problem since. Even when it sits for nine months, it still fires up.

It sounds like the old fuel line needs to be replaced. Over time the fuel lines harden and crack. While you are at it, disassemble the carb, give it a good cleaning and replace the diaphragm and all gaskets. The diaphragm is on one side of the carb and it is what pumps the fuel to the carb. You can do this yourself for less than $25.00. Order a gasket and diaphragm kit from an online source. Take a small piece of your old fuel line and visit your local auto parts store or small engine shop. Buy a few feet of Tygon fuel line and a can of carb cleaner. Watch a few you tube videos for information on how to rebuild your carb. That's how I did it. If I can do it, so can you. Stihl makes good stuff. I had the same issue as you with my Stihl 017. At that time the saw was 13 years old. The repair project was not too bad and I enjoyed doing it.
yep, plan to disassemble, trace fuel line. There's a carb. on the bay, 2 of them, bid around 10-12 bucks, may try, then new gaskets and diaphragm. I know it will run, it's been a great saw, used alot, construction work, it was so reliable, guess it just needs some TLC. Thanks for all.
removed fuel line and filter, no problems, but clean whatever I could. Stupid question,,,,there's 2 lines to tank, the 1 dark line goes tank to carb., the other line(clear) goes to tank and has a sponge. What is that tiny like screw like in the line with the sponge? I know, never said I was a small engine dude, plead ignorance! It restricts the air? just asking. Also I think the carb is bad, it continues to run if mix is placed on spark plug. Thanks for advice!!
