Old Skool Rotella T

Howdy -


This is my first post to this board. I've read alot of good things here about Rotella-T, and decided to get a couple of gallons.


My question: I actually purchased both these gallon jugs with the 'older' Rotella label, and the rating API rating is SH.

Can I assume correctly that, even though the rating is older, the additive package is still a good one? (better, I hope).


By the way, I'm not too worried about the SH...as this oil was bought specifically for my older '51 GMC truck with a 228 IL6 (non rebuilt).

I intend to get more, although they are out of the SH & will have to go with the SJ now.


BTW: I found this oil at my local AutoZone, if anyone else wants to snoop around at theirs to get some.

For a 15-40 it is an ok oil, but for more bang for the buck, Delo is a much better oil all around.

Why is Delo a much better oil? They're similarly priced. What about Motorcraft 15w40 which is the cheapest HDEO of all for only $2.07/qt at Wal-Mart?

First off,

That should be an excellent oil for that engine. Of course those old GM I6's are pretty much bullet proof-I think they'd run well on Crisco.

Is your truck restored? Any photos?

Delo uses GII + base stock, Rotella does not, delo has Moly in a good amount + standard HDD add package, Rotella has a standard add pack, Time after time in HDD applications Delo is hown to go farther -last longer than standard Rotella, in India delo keeps engines running smooth and clean in 40 deg C + ambiant temps day in day out. Rotella seems to deplete what little if any anti foamants are in it sooner, Lastly in my engine, Delo keeps it running happy and quieter longer than Rotella. I have noticed the difference in two HDD engines by differeent manufacturers, since 1995 when I learned of the difference. Motorcraft HD 15w40 is very similar to DELO and gives very similar performance. It sould, it also a severly hydrocracked base with plenty of good adds, namely anti-foamant that the some HDD's need. Keep Rotella for the tractor with mechanical injectors.

I can't determine if Shell uses GII or GII+ for basestocks. Even the T synthetic uses the term "highly refined petrolium oils" in its MSDS ..when we know that they are Group III (and when XHVI was used you could probably say GIII+).


According to this ..their base oils are Group II

Star 12 is for HDEO

Michael - Thanks. Yes the truck has been restored, although the engine is original & has not been rebuilt internally.


FWIW: I have used Delo in my 4.0 Jeep & have come to know that it is an outstanding oil; that Jeep loves it (nice & quiet, with good milage).

I don't think Rotella will be much of an issue, as I'm sure it already exceeds the guidlines of a 1951 GM engine.

. I just saw the PCMO and didn't see the heavy duty after it in Star 6.

I think it's more likely that Star 6 is for HDEO.

But I'm with you. Since they both meet CI-4+ specifications (implying they both have HDEO add packs), I don't see how Delo can be that much better.
