old gear oil

does gear oil have a shelf life and just get "old".

Got a 1/2 gallon of 80w-90 that's at least 5 yrs old.

Do I dump it or use it ?

As long as it's been stored in a sealed container, and hasn't got contaminated with water...etc.., it should be fine.

Theres cars and trucks running around with decades old gear oil in their axles. A few years on your shelf ain't nuthin.
