I need a little over four quarts of gear oil to change the front axle lubrication in my tractor. Rural King has two gallons of their house brand Providence 80w-90 conventional gear oil for $36. I’ve used their motor oil for over a decade without issues so I’m confident their gear oil is equally good. Is there any reason to splurge on synthetic oil for this? Kubota just specifies 80w-90 gear oil with no mention of conventional or synthetic.

Is there a better deal out there on gallon+ quantities?

$36 for 2 gallons is an excellent price. Traveller @ Tractor Supply is $45 for the same quantity.
I went with 80w90 Supertech, its cheap and only needed a few quarts for my BX.

If you need the other gallon, it is a good deal. If not:

or even cheaper:

Mostly the fact I would need to make a special trip to buy some. I have exactly enough to do the transmission and hydraulics but not an extra gallon.
Yeah, the book says either. I am in the gear oil camp in the front diff....but then you have another fluid type. I still have UDT, but would not hesitate to use gear oil.......mine is HST. 2501, same machine

Those front axles can be hard to fill. When it get to the check hole, stop, plug, wait an hour, then take the check plug off and top off. It takes a bit for the fluid to seep into the lower knuckles.
