OK to use longer filter? (same size, but longer!)

An oil filter for the Camry will fit on my 2007 Corolla. The price is the same but it's LONGER, which would suggest greater filtering capacity.

Is it safe to do this? Is there a reason why they chose to make the Corolla oil filter shorter? I believe there might be a good reason Toyota specifies different filters for the two different cars. I believe it cost a lil more to manufacture two different oil filters than to make many of just ONE kind. But this is just a hunch I don't really know.

any thoughts? I'd like to use the Camry filter if I can.

I don't know how Toyota does things, but I know that there can be quite the difference between filters and their Flow-Rates, Filtering Specification, Burst Pressure etc. I would do some research and compare both model numbers to see what they are. Look up both filters for the two different cars on WIX filters website and see if their are any major differences. If there is then you might want to rethink it.

Don't know about Corollas but SAAB owners do it all the time. I know one poster on here was able to get like an extra liter and a half after switching to some giant AMSOIL EaO filter.

But, I would add that for a Corolla over the normal oil change interval you probably don't need a bigger filter.

You can use the longer ones. Toyota said either or.

I called Toyota USA on my 2005 corolla after buying a case of their filters. They said that the longer ones are the same as the shorter ones and would work fine.

As long as the threads and oring are the same it should be fine. I do it al the time on my vehicles whenever possible (i.e. PF52 [long] on PF47 [short] cars, or the longer Chevrolet truck filter in place of shorter pass. car ones etc.). However, you need to be sure the shorter filter wasn't specified for a mechanical clearance reason i.e. control arm travel, normal engine rocking clearance, ground clearance etc. I don't have first hand information on your car so you need to check this.

The difference in length may not be what you think as I recall someone here severed the heads of the 2 filters for the Corolla in question and the filter element was the same... either the Wix 51394-51396 or the Purolator ...76- ...77. The differnce is so small it doesn't matter. I swap these out all the time.

You really should get your 2 numbers and cross them over on the Wix Site. Most filter mounts have enough room on them so that the O-Ring can be slightly bigger or smaller.

Check for same threads of course then check the bypass valve Psi and antidrain back (yes or no).

If everything checks out to be exact or very close then the filter will be fine to use.
