I got my Ninja ex500 last summer & immediately used Rotella 15w40 weight in it, without considering the weight. Seemed ok.

This summer, I am actually trying 10w40 (in Castrol) and it seems to be a smoother shift.

Was I wrong to use a heavy weight for summer last year? My owners manual says use 10w40.....

40 weight oil is 40 weight oil regardless of what the smaller number in front is.
15W-40 is good down to below freezing, and Rtella works great in cycles, so no worries.

I know the Rotella is a non-energy conserving oil which is fine for motorcyle wet clutch operation. I don't know about the Castrol 10w40 though. If it says energy conserving on the SAE label it may cause your clutch to slip.
