Very good point, especially with chassis dynos as mentioned by Jeff above. The variations are HUGE.
Same day, same dyno is even suspect as the barometric pressure and temp varies wildly sometimes, plenty to skew results.

Yes you can possibly run a lighter oil and gain more power without risking engine damage but you'll need an oil pressure gauge to do so. The objective is to maintain the minimum optimum oil pressure when the oil is as hot as it ever gets.
If you can do that with a 30wt or even a 20wt oil then that's the heaviest oil you need. Anything heavier will just rob power.
Futhermore, choosing an oil with a high viscosity index will improve cold driveabilty by reducing power sapping oil drag during the warming up period. This can be quite noticeable with some turbo's that are prone to turbo lag.

Lets take them at their word, that they were able to get the engine completely cleaned out, and all variables like operating temps, acceleration time, etc. were the same for each 5w30 test. The question I would have is real world..what about tomorrow, a month from now, who wins 5k from now?
