Just did. Indian guy at the gas station had no idea what I was talking about. Independent guy in my town didn't answer his phone. This is what I meant about easy to find.

They mean you can use a 0w30,5w30 or 10w30..there all 30 weights.

An individual "dealer" called me back shortly after my last post. Nice guy. Sold me 4 quarts out of his garage ($8 each). He was also surprised that the BP garage had no clue what I was talking about. I wasn't. Whoever answers the phone there is probably some kid who knows nothing about anything.

So this stuff never goes bad right? Hoping I'm set for 4-5 years.

Pablo, do you think the ASE is superior to the HDD or the MCF i've been running? I really did not know about the ASE so i've never run it.

5 years is not a problem. Maybe shake the bottle before use, but the oil will be fine.

It depends. If you need a 40, then maybe not. But ASE does have more corrosion inhibitors. If you are under a couple years of use, matters not.

If it starts easily doesn't need a spark plug... Period

My '04 Honda still has orig NGK plug, no wear on electrode and clean as if used maybe one season, always starts first or second try..

Briggs engine right? The Toro and Briggs manuals probably dont align on recommendations. When in doubt, read the engine manual.

This is what Briggs has to say:

Oil Recommendation

SAE 30 40° F and higher (5° C and higher) is good for all purpose use above 40° F, use below 40° F will cause hard starting.

Conventional 10w30 0 to 100° F (-18 to 38° C) is better for varying temperature conditions. This grade of oil improves cold weather starting, but may increase oil consumption at 80° F(27° C) or higher.

Synthetic 5w30 -20 to 120° F (-30 to 40° C) provides the best protection at all temperatures as well as improved starting with less oil consumption.

Conventional 5w30 40° F and below (5° C and below) is recommended for winter use, and works best in cold conditions.

Type of oil to use

Use a high quality detergent oil classified "For Service SF, SG, SH, SJ" or higher.

Do not use special additives.

Choose a viscosity according to the table above.

The Amsoil ASE stuff you bought is good stuff and will serve you well.

Truth be told, ANY 5W30 or 10W30 synthetic, to include store brands, would serve just fine in a lawn mower. You are changing your oil regularly, and that is the most important aspect of longevity.
