Oil usage in newer cars

Wondering what you all thought of what you think is normal oil usage for newer vehicles these days. I have a 2023 Chevy Equinox 1.5 liter turbo with 17,000 miles and it has used approx. 1 quart of oil per 5,000 miles since new. Do you think this is normal?

Depends on if it gets better. My Accent burned a quart the first 3000 miles. It's down to a half a quart every 3500 miles now at +190k miles.

Personally, I find any oil consumption unacceptable. The ICE has been around for over 100+ years, surely by now there is no need for an oil-burning as "acceptable". My 2021 Tucson has 70K on it and has never used a drop of oil since new.

My 2023 Tucson uses no oil at all at 11K. Sons 5 yr old Hyundai Kona uses 0.

That is a known oil burner motor and that is what I see in them. 1 qt/5k miles is actually a good report for that motor. Keep an eye on it.

I agree. Oil usage has increased in newer cars due to trying to reach EPA goals at any cost and one way is low tension pistons rings. This is one major reason oil use is more on modern cars then I even remember cars from the 80-90's using!

depends on the vehicle some vehicles are known to be problems with oil consumption. my wife's 2020 Nissan Sentra around 36k no oil consumption same with my 16' rogue 61k no oil consumption.

As mentioned it could get less or worse. It’s a 50/50 coin toss. Would you consider selling the vehicle? If you did make sure to research your next purchase.

My 2011 Fusion used basically no oil in 10,000 mile OCIs up until I junked it at 324k miles with a transmission failure. About 4 oz. My 2018 Mazda 6 used no oil with 7500 mile OCIs up until it got totaled in an accident. I don't have good days on my 2024 CX-50, yet. It's only got 3900 miles on it.

Oil usage on modern engines should be minimal. It's not like piston rings are new or anything. Even these newer rings are still good enough at sealing.

Do you add a quart at 5000 miles and carry on or do you just change the oil at that point.

I agree with you that I'd rather have zero oil loss, but regardless, I would not go beyond 5k miles with this turbo GDI engine.

2019 Toyota 2.5l dynamic Force - same as the new ones. Zero oil consumption from day 1. Only 35,000 miles though.

2008 Nissan Xterra, approaching 400,000 miles - almost zero oil consumption - I can see its down a little bit on the stick when I change it at 3000 OCI, so very close to zero. Still running 10W30 conventional.

Still, 1 quart every 5000 miles doesn't sound like an issue to me. What kind of diving - stop and go, highway??

Almost all highway. Probably 90%

Should be easier on oil consumption at constant speed at operating temp.

Still, I presume the dealer will tell you 1 quart per 5000 miles is "normal". Your long term issue will be carboned valves and destroyed cats.

You DIY the oil change? Might be worth trying a different brand. I know it sounds odd, but some engines don't like some oil brands. Lots of examples here.

Both our 2015 and 2017 burn around 1qt /5k miles. Bumping up to 5w30 did improve it a bit.
