I've been using MMO for years in the gas and oil. I recently got an '07 Ford Focus with 2.0L engine. The factory recommended oil is 5W-20 and I've been using Mobil 1. Oil capacity is 4.5 quarts. Here's the question ... can I add a half quart of MMO to the oil without thinning out the oil too much so that it doesn't provide optimal protection for the engine? Should I add some 5w30 to offset the MMO, and if yes, how much?

Mobil 1 5W-20 doesn't need anything added to it!
I wouldn't use MMO but if you like to stick to tradition start with a thin 5w30 and add the MMO.
It thins out oil and if it's too thin your engine is not going to get the necessary lubrication it needs.

Why waste the money on M1 if you're just going to play mad scientist with the MMO anyway. If the engineers at Mobil can't crack the code of an additive from the 1930's why trust them to make oil at all.
I guess yes, if you have to add MMO (and you don't) add less so it doesn't change the viscosity. If you can't fathom that I guess you would have to go with a thicker oil, but consider how ridiculous what you are doing is. (you add so much MMO you have to use a non-recommended viscosity to balance it out!)

IMO if there is no issues with the engine and minimal oil consumption, the only thing that goes into the engine is the specified oil. But i agree with the above post, if you HAVE to use it... start with a 5w30

5w20 is already very thin oil - I have clocked it reaching operating temperature in 2 and a half minutes at a cruising speed of 45 mph.
The only reason to have a thin oil is for better gas mileage. If you are driven by this goal, use Mobil 1 0w20. If you check the back of new bottles, Exxon now says 0w20 meets Ford's WSS-M2C945-A oil specs, which are recommended for the Focus.
If you use any 5w30, your oil will be thicker than the OEM 5w20.
I only use Motorcraft 5w20, Mobil 1 5w20, or Mobil 1 0w20 in my 2007 Focus.

Is there a sludge or engine cleanliness issue. If not I have to ask why add it to the oil if there isn't an issue.
And I just joined the mmo forum. They state 4 ounces per 10 gallons is ideal and to not overdose the fuel.
And tig would be the authority on these engines and mobil 1 use. His experience proves his interval works with his driving style.

Again. Is there an engine sludge issue. If not what exactly is there to be gained by adding mmo to the oil. Mobil 1 already spent millions is r+d making the oil so it maintains cleanliness. We all know tbn is lowered when mmo is added to the oil. So if what you are trying to achieve is diluting the additive package,and making the oil weaker so it cannot go as many miles in the sump,then right on. Job well done.

Agreed. But if you must use MMO go up a grade because it will thin out.
If your engine is clean mmo isnt goin to get it any cleaner. But if your engine has higher mileage I would do a piston soak right before my next oil change.

Don't go crazy lauding what the engineers supposedly say.
Of course many oil and fuel additives are beneficial.
But mfrs cant give free reign to dump anything in! This is not engineering, but common sense!
And consider different oils and gas with various amounts of additives. Do they say no to them? Of course not!

Wow, sorry guys, I didn't mean to ruffle any feathers by saying I wanted to add some MMO to the oil. I bought this car used, with 115K miles, so I don't know what its oil/change history is. Looking down the oil filler hole things look like they could stand a little cleaning up; that's why I thought I'd add some MMO.
