Oil temps too low?

Well I'll be ****ed. I've had this car for 5 years and didn't know about this feature. I've always grabbed data using VAG-COM. Thanks much! [bowdown]

Although, unless I missed it, I didn't see oil, specifically, but I did see engine coolant temperature.

DD

It's not a commonly known feature. You may want to poke aroud Audiworld for all sorts of interesting tech articles and write-ups.

The exact C/C display features (and channels) may vary between model years. My '96 (2.8 V6)has the first generation C/C display and it does show oil temp. Your car's equipment will likely be different.

The underside of the pan registered 179 degrees F. I was expecting something higher, as the oil should have been significantly warmer than that.

Poor proxy for an oil temp gauge, I know.

I curious how you did this...what device does this type of infrared scan?

Sounds like secret spy gear.

Probably an infrared thermometer, something like this one sold by Sears:

Google infrared thermometer and you'll find lots more.

Should I worry that my oil temp isn't getting hot enough for good circulation on a daily basis?

I really don't think that an 18 mile commute, with 75% freeway driving, falls into the short trip category.

Moisture in the oil will begin to evaporate at temps over 150F, it doesn't need to reach a full 212F(100C) to be driven out of the oil.

Also, the circulation of the oil thru the heat zones of the engine is exposing it to higher temperatures than the temperature measured in the crankcase.

I would question the location of the sensor, is it actually extending into the sump and not located in a fitting outside, as I would expect the oil gauge to display full operating temperature by the end of your daily drive.

Here are the reading for my oil temp. I trying to figure out will car get to the op temp faster with thicker or thinner oil!

Car is 2001 Audi S4 2.7L V6 BiTurbo

Oil is Delvac 15w40

Outside Temp. *** 76 *** 86 *** 75 *** 88 *** 76 *** 89 ***

I was just looking at the analog needle on the dash gauge. Not sure what you mean by the C/C display...is this something in the in-dash trip computer, or would I need to hook up VAG-COM to do this?

Thanks,

DD

The C/C (Climate Control temperature) display allows you to access onboard diagnostics and also to see sensor data without a VAG-COM. Your car's manual does not mention this feature, and its existence comes as a surprice for most Audi owners. Read up on it here: http://www.audiworld.com/tech/int6.shtml

If you comare analog and digital data you will find more or less slight discrepancies. That goes especially for RPM and temperature data.

Just checked the list of what could be displayed on our CC display and I don't see oil temperature on the list??

zoomzoom,

Was your data from a highway or city trip? Because even given the difference in ambient temps, your oil got much hotter than mine over about half the distance.

DD

Data points with outside temp in 70's are the morning runs...and the one with temp in 80 are afternoon runs..

I live 16 miles form work and on my way to work I have 3 miles of city driving then 13 highway...on the way back from work it is the other way around.

Have in mind that your engine is 1.8L and puts out 150HP so 84hp per liter..mine is 2.7L and puts out 325HP(chiped) so 121HP per liter...

still I think your oil temp is too low..or it might be that your gauge is reading on low side...

or you drive like grandma

zoomzoom, I don't have a 2001 S4, I have a '96 NA 2.8 V6 with the first generation C/C unit. There's also a chance I remember incorrectly and my C/C cannot display oil temps. It's been awhile that I've labored through the menu, which was when I was checking for a error code. I generally go by the analog gauges, as they seem to perform in a conistent manner and well enough for me.

Ah, but I'm chipped, too. With APR and catback, I'm at about 215 HP, so 119 HP per liter. I just would have expected the far larger sump of the 2.7T to lead to cooler oil.

Could oil weight differences account for a chunk of the difference?

And, yeah, maybe my sensor is reading low...

DD, why don't you mosey over to audiworld.com and ask for common oil temps on the B5 forum? Better take a stick along for protection, but I'm sure you'll get some feedback.

Not a bad idea. It would be a nice break from 'UR rimz R the SHIZ' and 'Today I smoked a ricer' posts that seem common there now.

"Moisture in the oil will begin to evaporate at temps over 150F, it doesn't need to reach a full 212F(100C) to be driven out of the oil."

True but as an example wet oil .1-.3% water will NOT be dry after 1 hour at 240F with DRY air blown through to strip water, the dispersants and TBN sulfonates will emuslify the water into very small "unkown" particle size which takes longer than 1 hour at 240F to "boil" off.
weird huh?
bruce

Wow, if that's the case, even if they turn to steam, I wonder if they're just trapped in little microscopic steam pockets, totally surrounded by oil, without enough energy to break out...

Your temps are definately too low, you need some weights attached to your foot.

I just took an Allroad with the 2.7 twin turbo and get it up to 225 on a 15 minute drive.

Not as quick as my saab, but **** it grips.

Well, sure, if I'm having fun driving through the hills, I can get it up to 200ish with spirited driving after 30 minutes or so.

But that's just not possible for me on a semi-gridlocked freeway, no matter how much my foot might want to splurge.

I'm lucky if I can hit 80 mph on the way home.

DD

Try lower gears. Sure you'll use more fuel, have more piston travel per mile, and probably wear your engine out a little faster ..but you'll rid yourself of any hint of moisture in your oil.

With spirited driving your oil temp should be in 225-250 range!!
So I think you need to check you oil temp sensor..make sure its conntacts are clean and rust free..I am sure it is pretty cheap so why not just replace it?
Since you have vag tool maybe you can make a log of your oil temp one morning on your way to work nad plot it here for us..that also might give you some clues!

Well see what kind of temps I get after some rompy driving today. I'll be taking it out for some recreational spinning after I shop for an Icelink this afternoon.

Let me know how ice link works for you I have been thinking of getting one as well..but $200 seems to much for couple of cables and connector?
