Oil Temp in Stop and Go Traffic

I thought this was pretty high.

Update: kept an eye on it while driving home. 210F is what I got up to while driving on backroads. On the highway at 60-65 it was bouncing between 206-208F.

And no, I haven’t fixed the evap issue yet…. Yet being almost 20,000 miles lol

228F on oil temp isn't going to hurt anything. especially in light of the fact the coolant temp is also high.
So when you get moving again and get some airflow, did the temps return to normal?

when you start seeing 250 or more on oil temp is when you start thinking this thing is hot.
Assuming the reading is true and not a computer calculation.

The Sportwagen is anywhere from high 190s to 220s variable on ambient for street driving. For stop/go its typically on the low side of that range and highest on highway/higher RPM.
 
try turning on the AC so the fans run see what it is then. putting along with no air flow will make elevated temps.
The fans come on at a pretty high temp.. if the a/c isnt on.

I would say the temps are "as designed".

My subaru FB25 runs anywhere from 195-235 highway based on ambient temp. Higher on mountain passes and lower during low speed rural. Could be 230 highway and drops to 210 in traffic.
 
From oil temperature stand point, 226 is absolutely acceptable! It is not problem at all.
My Atlas runs in the city 212-230f, over mountain passes I don’t have problems pushing it to 260f.
I don’t know about Tiguan, BMW has oil cooler with thermostat opens at 230 and unless on track, stays there.
 
My Pentastar equipped Grand Caravan hardly ever goes over 200f. I only noticed it during highway climbs. Normal driving, it stays below 200f

Actually, it should go higher, at least above 212. When I see oil temperatures below 212 I am wondering if manufacturer is trying to address some other issue with low oil temperature.
My Sienna, which was absolutely horrible in warming up the engine and retaining heat after turn off, would run oil temperature between 220-230f.

I'm not sure of the advantages running the oil above 212f. Sure, that's where the hot viscosity standard is, but other than that, what would make it special?

On the other hand, running below 200F in normal, everyday situations, leaves quite a lot of room for when the engine is truly loaded up. Perhaps that was the design intent with the Pentastar engine since it is found in so many applications. From sedans, minivans, work vans to trucks.

BTW, the oil in my minivan does take a long time to heat up, but the coolant heats up pretty quickly. I have no issues with the heat in the cabin.

212 is the boiling point. It removes moisture, fuel etc., much faster from oil, especially in stop-and-go traffic when oil sometimes does not reach operating temperature.
The cooling system should be designed in such a way as to deal with load without problems. Oil temperature in 230-240 under load is absolutely not a problem and a cooling system should be designed to keep it there.
If the intent is to keep the temperature that low bcs. load, the question is why it is a problem to design a cooling system that keeps oil temperature in check under load. Others do it.
