I've been using M1 5W-20 (factory recommended weight) in my Focus 2.0L. The engine sounds a little noisy although there does not seem to be any mechanical problems and I get excellent gas mileage. Can you guys suggest another synthetic oil for this car that might make the engine a little quieter and smoother?

A lot of people have had good luck with Pennzoil Platinum and Valvoline Maxlife & Synpower running smooth and quiet. I have also found the same with kendall but it is harder to find.

Synpower or a dino will quiet it down. Id would just switch to a 0/30. But to most thats blasphemy.

I have run many 0w20 and 5w20 on various engines. So far the QSUD 0w20 is quietest, but I have less than 1K miles on the fill. Edge was too thick behind the piston and and Idemitsu Subaru too thin evidencing excessive noise and even mechanical knocking - in the Honda. The Subaru seems more tolerant of oil than the honda 1.5 (L15A7) - a suboptimal small engine architecture IMO. The QS may sacrifice some mileage for film strength but not as much as the Edge with Ti that seemed like I went up a grade - even as I ran it in 100degF Summer.

Most 2.0 Ford Focus cars use a 5w30 in CAFE free countries, but you need to list the exact engine type and year to figure out which Mobil oil is recommended in the oil guides.

Amsoil?

Hey ARCO, what leads you to believe that the Honda(L15a7)has suboptimal engine architecture, besides the harmonics. All engines make mechanical sounds to varying degrees, this doesn't necessarily indicate poor design. Having cracked open my fair share of engines i can say that Honda's are among the most well designed and executed powerplants in the commercial market. Just curious.

What year is your Focus? How many miles?

Why not try 5K on the OEM, Motorcraft?
