Oil selection for my 2010 VW Tiguan 2.0T TSI

So what's the general consensus on using GC in the Tiguans 2.0T? I just did my first oil change at the reccomended 15k (KM's) and used GC as it's readily available at Wal*Mart. The filter was about $20 from the dealer, ya gotta love the no drip/leak oil filter, easiest oil change I've ever done.

For now I plan to continue using GC, unless advised otherwise, but probably OCI's of 10k (KM's) or less.

I plan on a UOA from this winter, fwiw. GC did no better than other oils in RI-RS4's car, with heavy dillution.

At 1000 miles, I have zero consumption! Driving pretty hard, past redline many times. 22 and 19 mpg though.

On a fuel note, my car sat on the lot since OCT, so upon adding 2 bottles of Techron, it woke up a bit, but what it REALLY seems to like is the last tank, 2 cycle oil in 89 octane Top-Tier, which is odd because last tank was Sunoco 91 w/o 2C, just Techron. It's buttery smooth.

Anyway, the no consumption is a good sign.

Amsoil SSO or AFL?

I like Techron.

That's great you have no consumption. Aggressive break-in seems to work.

BOGO is the only way to buy Techron. AutoZone has it now in the 12oz. They have ProGuard too. I'm not sure how the ProGuard slots into the product line, but I remember hearing good things about it long ago.

Oh, who mentioned AMSoil?

I think I'm going to drop the FF early.

Looking at the UOAs from short runs in this engine, metals are really high, borderline abrasive at 80ppm Fe and 55ppm Cu, and the viscs are pretty low, under 11cSt. Going into mid summer, I feel like the FF oil is just not ideal, likely a low saps oil for max mpg and emissions.

I have the RP 15w40 that can go in now, and I'll just dump in one of my jugs of QSS 10w30 for the late Fall. Continuing with the thin FF and waiting till Fall to use the RP 15w40 and running it into late Dec is not ideal visc-wise.

At 1000 miles now, this is the plan.

Here's a couple of new pics, I'm really liking this machine.

Naming process

Tiguan is a combination of the German words Tiger (“tiger”) and Leguan (“iguana”).

As part of a marketing strategy by Volkswagen the name was chosen by the public through the Auto Bild group with over 350,000 voters through Auto Bild's magazines and Web sites. The other possible names were Namib, Rockton, Samun and Nanuk.[2]

I'm thinking about running some Edge 5w30 this winter.

I have GC here, but Edge is nice and thin and the engine is still tight. I'll mostly be doing very short trips this winter and maybe not so much in the next few years.

I've see 5w30 synth work in Audi turbos just fine. Not worried about too much fuel dilution, I'll be dumping after 4 months anyway.

Any feedback? Edge is a super-premium product.

Really have me wondering why you'd choose 89 octane over 91/93.

For me it is 93 or bust, well I have no choice since I'm tuned for 93. I'd love the Sunoco 94 but the few stations around here that had it closed shop.

Trying to get a baseline on how it runs on 89, 91, 92 and 93. I take some longer road trips which means burning a whole tank in a day. On the hwy only 15-20 hp is needed anyway. I don't do those long trips so much now, but I picked up some habits from when I used to drive 20k a year, every year, and similar for the wife.

I was spending $300/mo on gas and she spent about $200. So naturally we try to use the most cost-effective products. Now it's a lot less, her commute is 2 miles and mine is zero since I work on the appt building we live in. Her Astra calls for 87 but we use 89 and 91 in that, so it's just a matter of trying different grades. Right now I filled w/93 and it's seems worth it if I don't burn it all in a single day.

I dusted off some Edge 5w30 and think I'll UOA it next April. If it looks good, I'll use the 2 changes of GC I have for non-winter.
