Some people don't trust the thin 0/5w20 and think it was only there because of CAFE and that it doesn't actually protect as well as 5w30 does. But the warranty requires 0w20.

What are your driving conditions? What kind of driving will this car actually see?

Yeah, I can see that and I would have the same concerns. I’m in metro DC so not a lot of weather extremes. So I would say 50/50 city/highway, I do idle a fair bit sitting outside waiting on clients, etc (I’m in the real estate business). I do at times have short trips, but have a 17 mile commute each way so bookending each day is a good trip.

Figured I would update everybody on what I wound up doing.

Went ahead and had it changed at 5k with TGMO 0W20 and a Purolator Boss filter. Will have it changed again at 10K and by that time will have a TRD filter (couldn't get my hands on the right part number for my application in time), and then going forward will stay on a 10k OCI with TGMO and the TRD filter.

Question, the TRD filters and Amsoil synthetic filters sure look the same, any thoughts?

Also, my independent uses Idemitsu 0W20, per quart very similar cost to the TGMO, but I could get that on-line in a 5 quart jug for like $17, which would be dramatically cheaper than buying 10 quarts of TGMO. Any thoughts about that?

Idemitsu makes quality oil that will work great in most Japanese cars. In fact, they are the OE supplier for most Japanese cars and usually make the factory fill for the Japanese. Amazon even sells Idemitsu's high moly 0w20, too

The TRD and Amsoil filters are probably the same, both made by Champion Labs in Albion, IL. Royal Purple's oil; filters are also the same as the other two.

While you are still under the 70k powertrain warranty, I'd take it to the closest Lexus dealership, get your free loaner car for a day or two, and not worry about it. Most of the time you are going to get a free car wash as well.

Lexus has regularly scheduled maintenance every 5000 miles, but only at 10,000 mile intervals is the oil changed, so they do other stuff than just change the oil, including tire rotation, CPU and Nav system updates, etc.
