Hi all, been a reader of the site for a long time, first time posting.

As the title implies, I’m looking for oil reccoemdations for my new Lexus. Best to stick with TGMO? Any other thoughts? Thoughts about moly content in this engine?

Primary characteristic I’m looking for, outside of good protection is low engine and valvetrain noise.

Not worried about cost, will do 5k OCIs at my mechanics reccoemdation.

Thanks!

There is certainly nothing wrong with TGMO. It is a quality synthetic oil made by XOM.

What kind of oil does this car require?

Thats a nice car. Follow dealership. Most likely required synthetic oil and premium fuel. I'm gonna guess 0w20 but i dont know. Check owner manual for weight AND specific specifications. Again, nice car.

all lexus now have 10k oci for normal usage.
your vehicle also has a 9quart sump so a lot of oil.

if you're changing every 5k, you are overmaintaining so any oil will be fine.

You would get more satisfaction using that extra money towards waxing or detailing your car.

10k mile oil changes or you are probably wasting your money. Get a used oil analysis if you are worried.

Any synthetic 0w20 should be fine for at least a 7500 mile OCI in that well engineered engine....even Supertech or Rural King syns.

If it were mine( and yes I'm jealous) I would probably do 10k oci using either tgmo 0w20 or Mobil 1 0w20

9 quarts?? Yikes .
After 30k I'd get a used oil analysis, mostly for TBN.
Any reports on fuel dilution in that engine?

Since you're not concerned about cost and just want the best oil, I'd go with Mobil 1 Annual Protection 0w20, which is the latest chemistry from Exxon-Mobil.

In a few months, Ravenol will be importing their dexos1 Gen2 qualified 0w20 oil (ravenolamerica.com knows). That one has tungsten, tri-nuke moly, and orgamic FM's too, with pure PAO+POE base oils. ... A new Lexus ought to get the best stuff. ...Fram Ultra oil filters have the best filtering efficiency.

Go with Toyota's recommendation, not a mechanic. Engineers & designers at Toyota put in a 9-quart massive sump to make their 10,000 mile oil changes a piece of cake.

I use TGMO on my Lexus and am happy with quality & price, but was not happy with the quality of the oil filter so went to TRD (Toyota Racing Development) and got a filter from them $27 instead of $7, but the build quality is night & day. I don't know if it is necessary, but the OE filter feels so cheap I could not reconcile myself with using that.

Toyota oil is made to Toyota spec and people here have great VOAs and used oil analysis about it. You can't go wrong, especially since Toyota recommends going for a year on it, so I would stick to it if you want to stick to Toyota's warranty.

Thanks for the nice remarks guys, its a great car!

Thanks all, should have been more clear from a couple of the responses, OEM spec is 0W20 which I'm going to stick to, mostly was looking for thoughts on brands of oil. Done a lot of reading on the site and I'm leaning towards sticking with the TGMO. FYI, when you go to at least my Lexus dealer and get an oil change, they do NOT use TGMO. They use some barreled off brand synthetic oil. They sell TGMO in the parts department and the only way to get them to use it is to buy it there and direct them to use it. They'll only do the first change at 10k which is free, which I will provide whatever oil I decide to use for them to use. It'll go to my mechanic after that.

Points taken about the large capacity sump in regards to OCI. My mechanic's (who was a Lexus master tech for a long time before he went out on his own) thoughts were because of the direct injection and timing chain being hard on the oil.

No issues with UOA on this engine with 10k OCIs I don't think, some people on ClubLexus have seen things in UOA on older ones (100k miles+) that have made them go to 5k drains, and they do seem to use some oil when they get high mileage.

Any thoughts about doing a change at 5k to swap out the original fill and use a better filter and then do 10k OCIs after that?

The RWD model takes 9.1 qts. and the AWD model takes 9.5 qts. TGMO was recently reformulated with a lot more moly in it now. The Toyo dealer here uses bulk TGMO 0w20 so another option taking it to a toyo dealer that uses tgmo. I'd talk to service managers and see what they say. If they hesitate or seem a little off when answering then I'd skip them. Or try another Lexus dealer that uses the good stuff.

Prob not a bad idea to change it early. Seems to be the consensus on here. Not sure if time enters into the equation but change at the one year mark no matter the miles.

Is this the Rockville Lexus location? Looks like they change the cabin and engine air filter at the 10k service interval also.

I had used Rockville forever but plan on using Silver Spring where I bought that one (Rockville charges for loaners with annoys me). It has about 3,800 miles on it now. It has to go in for the 5k service (which is free also, but just consists of a tire rotation and checks basically), I'll have them change it then, then again at 10k and then stick to 10k OCIs. I will ask Silver Spring if they use TGMO, its Rockville that doesn't.

Whats the consensus about filters? I saw one post about Fram, and another about TRD's filter...

TRD for that cartridge application. There is no Fram Ultra for that application. The TRD has metal end caps and a synthetic media, all extra strong.

just buy a 10pack of filters and drainplug washers from an authorized totota or lexus parts dept.
Many have set up storefronts on evay or amazon so its pretty easy. Just make sure they're associated with a dealer to ensure genuine parts

I would argue that none of the prior replies is the consensus. its whomever has the most time on their hands.

The owners manual should be the definitive recommendation as the majority of lexus will be following that (also considering that many LSes are leased for a tax writeoff with a prepaid Lexus service plan).

I directly will say the 5k change is needless and not needed. Same with non oem filtet.

Any idea what part number is the appropriate part?

I’m sure that the OEM filter would be fine. But what’s the fun in that?

If you’re sticking with 0W-20 and running to 10k, Mobil 1 Extended Performance would be my choice. Hard to find a bad UOA with it. And buying from Walmart (especially right now while it’s on sale PLUS up to $24 in rebates) is very affordable.

When the warranty is up, switch to 5w30

Out of curiosity why would you recommend switching to 5w30?
