I'm looking for an oil recommendation for the car I just purchased. It's a 2009 Toyota Prius with 28,000 miles. I bought it as certified used from the local dealership. I am providing some details to help with the recommendations...

1. 2009 Toyota Prius- 28k miles
2. Owner's manual says 5w30 recommended.
3. I live in Utah but the winters have been really mild for the last 5-10 years. The temperature has rarely dropped below 15 degrees.
4. I am a pretty light driver (I like to maximize my fuel economy).
5. Daily commute to work is 45 miles, mostly highway. I also have the normal city driving for errands and such.
6. No known issues with the vehicle. It looks and feels like its two years old!

I can't think of any reason not to.

Welcone to the site.

BOOM! That's a quick 4/4. I think I may head to Wal-Mart right now. But first, any recommendations for the filter???

Drop into an Autozone on the way to see if that oil is $1 a quart.

Go for the Mobil 1 Extended Performance version and a Fram Ultra. Aim for a 15k mile oci by doing a used oil analysis at 10k miles. Your highway miles should make that possible.

Yep. Give the oil and filter 10,000 miles of your highway commuting. Get a used oil analysis if you'd like.

4 more votes for the Fram Ultra...BOOM! You're done!

If you're interested in max fuel economy, you can drop down to a 20-wt

Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0w20 or really any 0w20 synthetic. I'd use the cheapest syn on sale, unless you're going for an extended OCI.

Purolator makes a filter that's half an inch longer, PL14477, or PSL 14477.

Stock is 14476...
Fram does not make the longer filter...

Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 & Fram Ultra filter. But doesn't that car have a canister filter?

I think that I would use Mobil 1 Extended Performance 0W-20 and a Toyota/Denso oil filter. Alternatively, you could use a long life Mobil 1 oil filter and safely go the distance for a 10,000 mi + OCI.YMMV

If I understand correctly, there is a comprehensive 12 month/12,000 mile warranty on all Toyota Certified Used vehicles. Also, the Hybrid Battery Pack is covered for 8 years or 100,000 miles. I've got about 19 months left on that coverage.
