This is my sons car. He lives in Tampa,FL. He is currently using 5w30 conventional. The engine is burning/leaking a qt. about every 1500K miles. Someone suggested using 10W30 HM or even a 10W40. Besides bad gas mileage will these oils hurt the engine? Suggestions?

10-30 was a factory oil approved weight for Toyota in the 90's, espacially in warm weather. I'd try Rotella T6 5w40, though.

Liqui-moly makes a product called motor oil saver. It helps swell seals stopping leaks. I had an antifreeze leak into my oil. This product stopped the leak.
Valvoline makes a great high mileage oil that's been proven to slow leaks as well if you want to go that route.

I'd see what the leak is, and if it burns oil at startup only but passes emissions still. That would be a valve problem and oil will burn no matter the grade, so in that case id go even cheaper than a High Mileage oil and buy walmart supertech quaker or mobil5000.

Most of the leak was coming from the valve cover gasket, which he replaced, today. It does smoke a little upon startup (valve seals) and a little at driving speeds. I'm just going to suggest to him to start with a High Mileage 10w30 oil and go from there.

Yeah. Why not? Its likes $15 a jug at Wal-Mart and its kinda new. Try it out......I think I may try it out to even tho I dont need a High Mileage oil.

As much as it's leaking I might just suggest that he buy a container of 10w40 High Mileage oil and just top it off when needed, then just change the oil filter every 5K miles or 6 months, and top it off. Any opinions on SuperTech High Mileage oil?

Hold up a min. Most of the leak was a bad vc gasket. How much is it using now? Im not sure if its time to treat it like an old beater yet

Ok. "Some" was the VC gasket.
