oil recommendation question

I am pretty new to BITOG and just wondered what you guys think about this. I have two vehicles; 2005 Dodge Caravan 3.3 V-6 engine and a 2004 Hyundai Elantra 2.0 4 cylinder. The Dodge is the first vehicle I have owned that specified 5w20. I am really impressed with how quickly and quietly it starts up in the cold here in Nebraska. I don't know for sure but I think this can be attributed to the thinner oil. Hyundai started to spec 5w20 as an option on 05 and newer Elantras and as far as I know the 2005 engine is identical to my 2004. I don't have warranty on either vehicle. It would be nice to just keep one grade of oil around. Would 5w20 cause any problems for my Elantra?

I have a 2006 Elantra and I do not think there were any changes to the engine between 2003 and 2006 so I would be surprised if 5W-20 would cause you any problems.

I would say use it without a worry; many times 5w30 oils shear down to a 20 grade anyway.

My ex girlfriend's mother had a caravan same year that spec'ed 530 on the cap. At work I see them both ways that year. Honestly I don't see why no use 5w30 in both.

Warranty would be a consideration if still valid before straying from manufacturer recommendations.

+1 The company car I drive specs a 5w20 but the garage puts good ol Chevron 5w30. It is a 2003 Ford Taurus and has approx. 159,000 miles on the clock.

Thats what we use in our company vehicles as well. before that they were using Napa conventional. We have a 99 caravan at work with the 3.3L, used the Napa oil most of its life and it has 265,000miles on it now with no problems

Depends on the car, it's running condition and what your definition of severe service is. I would lean towards "most likely" but would need to know that info and see a used oil analysis first.

Good to hear about the good luck with the NAPA oil and the high miles on the Caravan. My 2005 is my first Caravan and I just picked up some NAPA synthetic and NAPA oil filter today for $21. They said the sale is on until the end of the month. ($3.29 qt). The MSDS for that oil says Valvoline on the NAPA website. Being as this is my first Caravan and my first try with NAPA oil, this is very good to hear!
