A good friend runs the pulling circuit and this past year I sponsered him with Amsoil. He had run Valvoline 20-50?? for years before in this application. With the issues dealing with ZDDP I stayed with the 10W30/30 Diesel oil and had excellent results. He was very impressed with what he thought was some additional power gains...don't know how or why yet?? (any good ideas

)

So now moving to the 07' season the engine has received it's winter freshening. Now with the concerns of ZDDP being eliminated what do the guys here think would be a good course to chart. Stay with the 10W30/30 or go up to the 20W50 racing oil. The cam is obviously the greatest concern. I realize there is more oil than Amsoil but I don't know any recomendations outside that brand.

Thanks for any help

Correction: I meant to say Redline Racing 30 Wt. Like Amsoil it also qualifies as a 10w30. However it is only intended for racing use and doesn't have the required detergents for extended use.

If the ACD 10W30/30 worked in the last set up is should do well with it this season. I would lean toward the 20W50 racing oil for a 454 tractor pull set up myself.

Gemeral Motors makes a product called E.O.S. engine oil supplement . Figure out a ratio that is not too much and add to oil for the zinc of your dreams. There is a virgin anaylsis look it up.

Not an answer, though something that's puzzled me for some time... Isn't it somewhat odd that GM is still relying on a ZDDP-rich assembly lube to protect new cams during run-in while Honda has been using a moly-rich assembly lube for years for the same purpose? Why the discrepency in early camshaft run-in protection methodology - does anyone seriously believe Honda knows less about long-term gasoline engine life than does GM?

ZDDP isn't eliminated, it's just that Phosphorus has an 800 ppm cap, not THAT much less than GF-3 oils.

And ACD is not subject to that limit because it's not GF-4. If that's the oil he was using, with good results, I say carry on!

GM still produces Gen I flat-tappet pushrod pig-iron crate engines. This is what the GM EOS is intended for.

Virtually all Honda engines are OHC, use rollerized valvetrains, crank triggered electronic ignition, g-rotor oil pumps. Their affinity for moly-rich assembly lube is for different purposes.

Let's get the facts out here.

ACD additive pack has NOT been reduced. ZDDP has not been "eliminated". If it worked before, it will work fine.

Yes the 15W-20 or 20W-50 might be worth a look if you want a bit higher viscosity.

You could add E.O.S if you like to any of these oils, but it's not really required.

I am sure the Amsoil has a good amount zinc ,Most likely the engine has killer valve springs so it could use extra zinc .E.O.S.has been around forever the first time I learned about E.O.S.is in 1969.
