Every time I change the oil in this thing I overthink it.
Specs in the manual are BMW 5w-30 LL-01 or LL-01FE
Accepted grades are 0w-30, 0w-40, 5w-30, 5w-40. In virginia FWIW.

Looking at Castrol Edge Euro and Pennzoil Platinum Euro.
Pennzoil platinum euro 5w30/40 is 226.5/229.3/229.5, 502/505 and LL-01. The 0w40 has the same specs minus LL-01.
The Castrol Edge Euro 0w40, 5w30, and 5w40 is 229.5 approved, 229.3 "suitable", 502/505 and LL-01 approved.

Any reason why I wouldn't use the either of the 5w-30s? How about the 226.5 spec (Pennzoil has it, castrol doesn't)?

226 is a full saps spec iirc which could be used in that but I'm not sure. The euro 30's have an acceptable hths so they can be used without issue. Castrol 0w-40 is the same price as 5w-40 but can only be ordered online from walmart but you get free shipping so I'd get castrol 0w-40 and m1 0w-40 is great too but castrol is on sale for $23.97 so buy a ton. It rolls in and out of stock so have it notify you when it's back in stock.

Castrol 0W40 is PAO based while 5W40 is group III, while both are perfectly fine for you, may as well get the better PAO base oil.
Penzoil Euro 5W40 is GTL based.
Both are excellent.
Just get the 40 weight oils, they are barely a 40 and will shear down into a 30 anyway.
Just buy the cheaper option.

I would throw in some seal conditioner in current oil a few hundred miles before the change.

Ha, the castrol is out as of yesterday. Guess the Pennzoil 5w40 it is.

Pennzoil 5W40 is excellent oil.
Local Auto Zone or AAP should have Castrol Edge 0W30 $37 for 5qt and filter. Also excellent stuff.
Castrol Esge 5W30/40 are step down from
castrol 0W30/40.
Mobil1 0W40FS is another excellent choice.

Just checked online at Walmart.com
Castrol Edge Euro 5W-40 is available in 5 qt jugs @ $23.97
However Castrol Edge Euro 0W-40 seems to be only available only in 1 qt containers - pack of 6 - much higher price @$51.17
(I have never found the 0W-40 or 0W-30 Euro versions in 5qt jugs - not on Walmart at least)
0W-40 in 5 qt jug is however available currently on Amazon though @$23.97

Good thing Amazon has it and for 23.97. The 0w-30 I can't recall seeing in 5qt jugs either but it'd be great if it does. Wish Walmart carried both on shelves.

Nah, tomorrow's oil change day. Wally world now has mobil 1 0w40 for $25. It's like playing oil whack a mole with them.

Ha, that must be a new thing.
I stand corrected.
Yeah guy at Advance did not understand why I couldn't get a 5 quart jug of the 5w30K. But they had 0w30, 0w40, and 5w40 in jugs, also 5w30 a3/b4, Dexos1 gen 5w30 in jugs. I'd have gotten it, but it's higher saps, and I figure my 213k mile, quart of oil every 2k mile burning, 2.0t FSI's cats, might appreciate the lower saps stuff. The 5w30K oil smells awful fresh from the bottle...the 5w30 C3 smelled pleasant...hope it doesn't make it stink while exhausting.

Mini Cooper has a very tight engine space and often gets hot in a long track or autobahn day. I prefer 0w40 for this engine with full SAPS A3/B4 spec.
