I have two cars, a 98 ford escort with 195k. It uses no oil at all. Also a 88 acura legend with 165k that uses about 2/3 of a quart every 3000 miles. Both manuals recomend a 5w/30. Would this be effective and safe? Mobil 1 5w/30 in the escort with the motor craft filter changed at 7500 miles. THe Legend I am running mobil 1 5/30 at 3000 miles but I need to get the fram filter off and add a quart in. I was thinking of 0w 40 mobil 1 in the legend because of the slight consumption. I am thinking the purelator oil filter on the legend or the napa gold. Would these filters go 7500 miles. P.s. the walmart sythetic mobil 1 oil change is 27.88 tax included and they will substitute or credit 2 bucks for the fram filter, it is to bad fram is all they have for the legend.

2/3 of a quart per 3,000 miles is ok engines do use oil. 0w/40 may help Cour dlaie gets a bit brisk in the winter so a syn. oil is good .still the consumption is not enough to wory about and gives you am excuse to add oil to refresh the additives.

I'd use Mobil 1 10W-30 in both with 5000 mile oil drain intervals, or 7500 if you don't do short drives. In the cold part of winter, use 5w-30. Draining Mobil 1 at 3k is a waste. M1 0W-40 is a fine oil, but probably not worth the extra cost for your Acura, and certainly not if you drain at 3k. I don't mix oil brands nor viscosities (mixing some 5W-30 and 10W-30 for convenience is OK, but I don't mix 30 wt & 50 wt, for example.) We know that the resulting viscosity is not the arithmetic average, and we don't know exactly what the resulting mixture is. What is it in the oil makes it a certain viscosity?...if we can't answer that, then we don't know what we have when we mix.

I am a little uncomfortable with 7.5 K miles without changing a filter. I do it-but I use a K&N which has a little less efficiency but higher flow. I have mixed one quart of the 15W-50 Mobil 1 with 3 quarts of 10W-30 Mobil 1. The resulting viscosity was 11.25 cSt. which is a high 30 wt. Consumption was cut about in half. I personally think its a good plan since 10W and 15W are pretty close on the lower end. Mobil 1 is also on the thin side as a 30 wt- about 10.2 cSt.

I used to be like that too, but look at the LS1 synthetic oil study and that filter looks to be doing a great job at 8k, no evidence of it being close to being filled. He's using a NAPA Gold/Wix.

7,500 miles will be fine so long as you're using a high quality filter. Heck, my '99 Accord called for filter changes every 15,000 miles using those OE Honda (relabeled Fram) oil filters.

The Purolator Pure One has good ratings, second only to the top-rated (but discontinued) ACDelco Ultraguard Gold oil filters.

With syn oil I don't think an oil filter has too much problem with a 7,500 mile life if the engine is clean from long term syn.oil use, as pao oils solvent properties are poor if none at all without additives ,but they do not have all the oil break down yucky stuff as in group1 base stock to dirty the engine and clog up the filter.

Filter life is generally limited by sludge and by damage to the media from abrasive particles and pressure pulses. With synthetic lubes, high quality filters can be used for long periods. The new MANN microtop oil filters are good for 18,000 miles/2 years when used with ACEA A3/B4 quality synthetic oils ....

Well, I have a sample in for analysis now where the filter went 10,041 miles. Previous two samples, for comparison, were 12,000 with a filter at 6000 . I inspected the filter and even with a magnifying glass there is nothing to see. The AD gasket looked great, the tension on the pressure valve seemed fine but the media just looked incredibly clean. This filter, IMO could have gone much further. Again, I don't think filters do much of anything in a well maintained, well operating modern engine that uses synthetic oil. Now, perhaps the analysis will come back terrible and alter my perception but we shall see.
