One stray thought crossed my mind here (yes, problem resolution is a continuous operation in my brain ..done on a time share basis).
You didn't happen to change the dip stick or have cause to change the dipstick tube during this evolution, did you? Do you go right to the "Full" mark at every oil change ..with the prescribed amount of oil (5 quarts)?
What would happen if you only add 1/2 quart of oil when it's down a quart??
