I am starting to think about getting my 2009 Silverado 1500 6 liter ready for the winter and was looking at my Jegs catalog and found this oil pan preheater from Stefs. http://www.jegs.com/i/Stef%26%23039%3Bs/861/6770/10002/-1

I like the theory of this heater but was wondering if anyone had any experience with something like this. I have heard of good reports with the "heater pads" that you attach to the outside of the oil pan but I am concerned with heat dissipation in the summer when I tow heavy loads when they are covering the oil pan.

What do you all think?

I use the wolverine heating pad #16 on my duramax as many do on the duramax forums. It's 4x4" @250w.

It makes a huge difference in the winter when added to the factory coolant heater. We have really cold conditions here. I don't even think about the effect a 4x4" pad on the bottom of the pan would have on lost cooling, but my guess is that it would be immeasurable.

I think this is a better and far more widely accepted option than the device in the jeg's catalog you referenced.

i use the katz type that sticks on with an adhesive. it is highly effective in winter, and it will not effect the oil temperature at all in the summer - the little tiny bit that it covers really is hardly significant.

Also using Katz 125w on both the oil and transmission pan.
I connected the wires to one plug and hung it out just under the grill. They work real well,-10f outside oil temps after 8hrs were 100f,no effect on summer temps.
