Eljefino had given me a suggestion for fixing my oil pan which held for quite a while. I had ZERO intentions or interest in dropping the pan. My 93 Aerostar had reached beater status and we decided that if/when it died we'd junk it. We weren't going to sink any $$ into it. Since we were using it for local hops if it did die a phone call and in 30 minutes a ride/tow would be on the way.
I drained the oil and let it drain over night, I cleaned the rotted area with brake clean and formed lead flashing to contour over the the bottom of the pan and up the sides. Fortunately the area near the drain plug was fine. I got JB weld and glued it on with that then caulked the edges to the oil pan with RTV sealant. It worked.
Not everyone wants to keep a car, or sink money into it, sometimes an out of the box repair will buy enough time to find a replacement, or get you another year, etc.
