Hey there,
"03, 5.3 Silverado, 6.5psi Powerdyne supercharger. I added Z-max to everything

, and I'd like some input as to which oil to go with

.Guys and gals, I need help, so sorry in advance.
I don't plan on Z-maxing again. Makes some tapping noises on and off, probably a rocker.
Seems like I may go w/ 5-30 PP, but w/ the boost, also considering 10-30, due to the added stresses associated w/ the said boost.
I'm in the learning phase of this oil guru stuff so please be gentle.

The zMAX stuff ain't even cheap. With $40 you could have bought something better like Amsoil.

If you are considering extended OCI I would choose M1 OW-40. From what I have seen it seems to hold up rather well.

Mobil 1 0W40 should work well for you. If you are keeping the OCI's shortish something like Castrol 5W30 should do the trick. But you really don't need any additives in your oil.

Yeah, I probably change it more than necessary. I figurred the Z-max would help, but now I'm not so sure. Oh well, as long as I don't have a catistrophic failure from it it's all good to me.

BTW, OCI's probably <3K.

Any more suggestions? I figured someone would chime in for a PP recommendation. That's where I was headed, but now not even sure.
Is PP more $ than M1? I'd really like to change my oil today.
Napa Gold for sure, but I went to a Mobil website, and someone w/ a similar ride (supercharged vehicle, stock compression) was referred to a 15-50. how does the 0-40 compare to the 15-50, wouldn't the 15-50 be like pumping heavy gear lube?

Now how's about a legit recommendation with your infinate wisdom.

Seriously tho, I can't wait to do a uoi in the near future. then my analysis will be more $ than some oil changes. I know, power in knowledge.
Peace out Dan

As stated, usually 2003,125,000 miles, 6.5psi supercharged 5.3L Silverado, good flowing exhaust.
I atleast feel a little more edumicated in the fact I'll never put in another Fram, Napa gold from now on.
PLease keep in mind that I've got a 160* stat in this too. No, of course it doesn't run at 160*, but probably 20-30* cooler than most of them out there. I thought that might be of concern when determining the weight and viscous properties of the 'chosen' oil.
Also, I'm in upstate, NY... COLD winter and, well the other seasons are normal.

For less than 3k OCIs, I'd go with Motorcraft syn blend 5- or 10w30. If you're willing to extend your OCI, I'd follow previous recommendations here and go with Mobil 1's 0w40. I'd run it for 7.5k miles and THEN have a UOA run on that sample.

If you're really interested in using Pennzoil Platinum, try the 10w30, also for 7.5k miles and then UOA that sample.

No more additives.

Just do PP 5W or 10W-30 and change it at 5K intervals and you will be safe and sound with nothing to worry about. Amsoil is great oil and so is PP and there are many other very good oils also. Honestly there really isnt any BAD oils on the market today. Some not as good as others but none that would be considered bad.

My favorite over the counter oil is Shell Rotella T 5W-40 synthetic. If I owned your truck thats what I would use in it. But again you cant go wrong with PP or amsoil.

Would there be any benefit to running three quarts 5W-30 and three quarts 10W-30 in it? I'm gonig to go with the PP though. Since I can't decide if I should use one or the other. I found the Amsoil for $8.70 a qt; reasonable? If I can extent my OCI's, I'll actually save $ using that.

Now that you've got the engine oil question sorted, what have you got in that 4L60E, and how long do you expect it to last with your current set up? Fluids and cooling may be more important here.

Been there and done that. The transfer case exploded shortly after I got the truck last year in July. Full rebuild on the tranny and a 60K x-fer case installed. The drive train is pretty stout. What I'd be concerned from now is the rear dif (lim slip G-80) and front assembly. I've got an SS '06 cluster in the truck too, so I get tranny temp

. Don't really know what type of fluid the shop used in the tranny tho. Probably whatever is cheapest and gets me thru the 1 yr warranty, which passed in July.
